This is a great book for tent campers. It is very resourceful for the camper who doesn't want to be around A LOT of people and RV's. I like the fact that each campground is rated, ex.: beauty, site privacy, site spaciousness, quite, security and cleanliness. In some cases there is also added history about the camping area, best tent sites, hikes to go on, closest groceries store. There is also a web site, phone number and directions for each campground. That way you can call ahead of time to make sure the campground is open (some might be closed because there is still snow). Plus you can check the weather ahead of time with the web sites. Bill Mai's "The Best In Tent Camping for Southern California" is my other go to book for tent camping.

Dated camping guide. Some campground have changed names or reservation scheme.
Worse, the guide is hard to use: there's only one tiny area map at the beginning. Campground ordering / numbering doesn't follow any logic. Need to go back and forth constantly to find an alternative campground. No picture, no color.
Some campground are rated 2 stars out of 5: why include them in the "best" guide ?
Many good comments on the campgroud / associated park history; but I would have loved more practical comments that will help me select the perfect destination for me.
I'll try another one...

The book is detailed and has led us to some lovely campgrounds. The descriptions paint a picture of the campground and surrounding area. All the essential info is there and the star ratings for beauty, privacy, spaciousness, quiet, security, cleanliness are useful.

The 2004 edition is very hard to use for planning purposes as the Northern California map is little more than a sketch. The listings are alphabetical and grouped into 3 broad regions: Coastal, Cascade Range and Sierra Nevada. It provides the address of each campground, which can be looked up individually. This is hard work for a weekend trip. I spent many hours marking up each campground individually. The effort was worth it!

I suggest providing a better road map or a link to a web page with a map (preferably one that can be used for directions, distances, times). Then we can use the book starting with the location - for short weekend trips this is essential. Distance makes a huge trip once in the mountains. At the very least, an accessibility code based on driving times from major conurbations.

The Look Inside the book for the 2008 edition skips the map so I assume that the map has not been improved - a real shame as I would buy another copy. Maybe in the 2013 edition?

This is a poorly written, poorly researched book. I opened the book looking for some camping in Southern California and the first thing I noticed was that the San Bernardino mountains are considered the Southern Sierras in this book. All credibility lost. I took a look at the "best sites" and was very disappointed at the amount of effort put into finding some interesting sites. They are not even tent only sites. Be prepared to share some campgrounds with RVs. Returning the book.

For a single mom and a high school senior daughter in Roseville, CA.
The daughter has never been tent camping.

I should have read all of the negative reviews more closely. I was looking for a book with more off-the-grid type camping / backpacking spots. This book simply lists car camping campgrounds (with designated sites / restrooms) that I could have easily found online, with more reviews there.
