Travels of a Naturalist in Eastern Tibet. The blue poppy of the title is Meconopsis speciosa, which Kingdon Ward described as the 'Cambridge blue poppy'; rather than the famous 'Tibetan blue poppy' (Meconopsis betonicifolia) that he later brought to England.

The region of the Mekong, Yangtze and Salween rivers in Yunnan, China is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This particularly biodiverse temperate zone has dramatic topography at a collision point of tectonic plates.

Travel at the turn of the 20th century was so different from today. There were places virtually unexplored. People and customs seemed strange. This reproduction must be read with historical perspective in mind. But by today's standards the story is slow and plodding, like his trek. We don't really get the excitment of some of the harrowing experiences he encountered. The descriptions of the plants was limited but his descriptions of the overall terrain was detailed enough so that you could imagine what it was like.

This a long out-of-print classic of exploration and adventure by one of the most prolific plant hunter-explorers of the twentieth century. Frank Kingdon-Ward, who once said that plant hunting was his job, but exploration and adventure were his hobby, shows the truth of that here. In one of the very earliest of his 27 or more expeditions into the far eastern Himalaya region to search for new plants that might be grown in English Gardens, his true passion shines through the scientific observations. In some of his later works, descriptions of flowers or plants might not be what every reader is looking for, but here, this is not a problem. His excitement for the new and unusual cultures and landscapes he is passing though, day after day, in the rugged country where Burma, Tibet, and NE India run into Southern China's Yunnan Province (where the action takes place here) comes through on every page, and makes the reader wish he could have been born in an earlier era when such adventures were still possible.

Though some may complain that Kingdon-Ward displays a condescending colonial attitude toward the indigenous peoples he meets, in my own experience among these regions, what opinions he offers are merely his own impressions on that early trip, based on his direct experience. In later works he shows more political correctness and an impressive sympathy for the people he meets; here, troublesome officials or cultural attitudes get the comments one would expect from an explorer having to deal with them on a day to day basis.

Though the book has been printed in a large format and with unattractive print, it is still well worth the read. Anyone who has an interest in the Himalayan region or in adventure, exploration, different cultures and especially, descriptions of nature, will enjoy this book.

I was unaware that digitalized copies of books were being sold. I purchased a this book for a gift, when I recieved it (about 3 weeks later), longer than I expected, I hated the type and copy, harsh and ugly print, very unsuitable for a gift. That was not in the description. Also, I found the return instructions complicated and asking for a return in unopened and original packing. How could you do this if you opened it and found it not to your satisfastion? I will wait to see if they credit me because I expect more complications.
