I found this to be the most practical book for those who are 'getting started'. The book does not assume too much about what the reader knows and makes no claim at being a complete reference; however, as a complete overview, it works fairly well and I couldn't find too many books that did this. I am a ColdFusion user and wish to create richer applications with Flash Remoting. I know almost nothing about ActionScript, and the book does a great job of explaining each of the components and how they all fit together. If the book presumes anything, it might expect you to already be familiar with Flash MX

With Flash Remoting being fairly new server technology, it is difficult to find a great book on the subject. Joey Lott knocks it out of the park with this one. It is by far the best book to date on the subject.
Although, my firm just finished a large Flash Remoting project, I was surprised at the number of ideas and tips I was able to garner.
I found it amazing that Lott was able to cover ColdFusion, .NET, & J2EE versions of Remoting! Kudos!
Take it from someone who has a library of over 40 Flash & ColdFusion books... very few authors have the ability to cover the content thoroughly, yet not bore you to tears, and give you a valuable resource book simultaneously. Lott definitely does that and thus, he rates up there as one of my top 3 favorite authors.

any of the examples worked!! I was so relieved to find the book when I scanned its index in the book before buying in the store.
When I attempted to apply ANY of the examples; as others have mentioned, some examples were missing from the downloads for the book, and when I spent lengthy time typing the actionscript, checking and double checking, none of the examples worked 100% like they said they would.
It was very frustrating to have read a chapter, apply the examples, and flip the page to read something to the effect of "Well, that's it!. After what we have just covered, Flash and Coldfusion integration doesn't get much harder than that".
I really wish the authors would have taken the time to ensure the examples, both printed and on their website actually worked before publishing the book!

As someone who believed Macromedia when they said Designers can learn this stuff, I was very frustrated after having spent hours, days and even weeks searching the web for tutorials on Flash Remoting, finding nothing that wasn't either way over my head - for programmers only - or something I had no need for.
Joey Lott is a remarkable teacher. His knowledge of ColdFusion, Flash and Flash Remoting is extraordinary. He is one of only two guys who regularly help people on Macromedia's remoting forum, and he knows his stuff. I know, because he helped get an application done when even Macromedia's support couldn't help.
I've only browsed the chapters, but I can't wait to get started on this book. And it's got some meat on it, too.
I'll report back as I finish the projects.

If you're looking to either learn FR or gain command over the skills necessary, this is a great book for that purpose. I began working with FR 2 months ago, and although I understood CF very well, I had trouble getting a grasp on the actionscript involved. This book definitely put me over the top and has been a great help in meeting my project deadline.
I did buy other Flash Remoting(FR) books, but this was the first I saw that went through such detailed analysis of not only the code, but why you're using that code. Joey Lott takes you through lines of code and explains why this is being done 'that way'.
Being that FR is fairly new, it can be hard to find answers to your questions. You can save yourself a lot of time by getting this book. For example, I have a large database with a millions of records. My recordsets are simply too large to query and load into flash. This book showed me of a great way to get around that.
Even newbie problems I had, such as getting all my form components to communicate correctly with my query...I found answers in the book. I'm not saying this will teach you everything you need to know, obviously there are issues out there that required me to post on Macromedia's site. But if you're going to buy a FR book, this is definitely the best choice.
For once, a book that lives up to its name.

I'm not sure what the other reviewers were thinking.
The coldfusion examples were horrible and full of errors.
In the recordSet section we are told. "Instead of setting up a database and returning records we'll create a recordset and pretend it came from a database" so the actual returning of a recordset doesn't happen. There are not many books on remoting yet, I'd wait for a good one and use the Flash remoting tutorials on macromedia's site.

Even as an experianced Java programmer, I had hard time following the examples using Java in this book.
Some example codes in the book are missing in the download.
So I had to type them in myself only to find the examples in the book are not working.
This book is so poorly organized that I can't help but to suspect that it might have been written by more than one author in a hurry.
As an example, at one point the book was dicussing accessing the servlet in JRun and then ran the demo in Resin.
This was very disappointing. I don't know why Joey Lott even bothered as a lot of whats in this book DOESN'T WORK! A total waste of time and money.
