Paul Morphy's father, Judge Morphy, of the Supreme Court of Louisiana, beguiled his leisure hours with the fascinations of Chess, and, finding a precocious aptitude for the game in his son, he taught him the moves and the value of the various pieces.

The Exploits and Triumphs. has been added to your Cart. Interesting read for the chess historian and fan alike. All we hear and read about is Bobby Fischer, but Morphy was the first true American World Chess Champion. One person found this helpful.

Interesting read for the chess historian and fan alike. Paul Morphy passed a long time ago and I wasn't overly interested in his history. I wanted to replay some of his games and they were not present.

Great piece of nonfiction chess journalism. Paul Morphy was one of the top chess players of all time, certainly ahead of all his contemporaries

I cannot speak for the accuracy of this book as it is the Kindle Edition, and I've found most Kindle edition books to be less than complete. I rated this book at 5-stars because it was an excellent historical read about this man and his phenomenal chess playing abilities.

I for one was not bothered by the lack of games, this is a book about the man, not a breakdown of his games.

I learned a lot about chess history in general from this book.

Edge was a good journalist and told us things we wouldn't have found out otherwise as Morphy was the reticent type. I enjoyed the book.

Great writing and account of a long forgotten American hero. The literature style is very enjoyable to read. And the price was great

I was delighted with this history (limited to Morphy's trip to Europe) of the American chess wizard, who amazed chess fans on the other side of the Atlantic. But be aware that there is not even one game of chess contained in this book. If you love chess history, that may not be a problem, but most of us chess fans also love chess games. I therefore gave it four stars instead of five.

No games, just lots of puffing and blowing by a writer of the times! I really would have liked a game or several.

There wasn't any actual game notation and that was what I was looking for. Paul Morphy passed a long time ago and I wasn't overly interested in his history. I wanted to replay some of his games and they were not present.
. There were no games given in examples of Morphy's powerful play. If you are interested in playing over Morphys games, look elsewhere. V Noah
