At 358 pages it attempts to try and codify tasks that you would want to do in Objective-C and OS X but you didn't know how to do it. I like the fact that all these tips are condensed in a book and not have to search the whole internet for each and every problem. I recommend this if you want to code a bit in OS X and iOS and need to solve a quick problem here and there.

This book is very, very good and helpful. Absolutely the best book.
Inside the book you can find huge amount of interesting informations which can you adopt in yours programs.
I have already two Chisnall's books and can I tell that he is clever guy and he knows what he write.

Whereas most books focus on getting the novice programmer up to speed with the nuances of a new programming language, this book does no such thing. It's equally useful for novices as much as it is for experienced programmers. There is no order to follow, given the informal structure. As the title suggests, 'Objective-C phrasebook' is best used when you know how you would like to tackle a programming problem, but would like to use established syntax or algorithm to do so. Apple developer documentation is great, but it is too comprehensive for when you just want to know how to do something quickly, like create new threads or use blocks in your new application.

The small size lends to leisurely reading. Even as a quick reference, the book does an extremely good job of introducing new concepts to the reader, or at least guiding them towards more knowledge. The author's experience in writing great software clearly shows as you use the code snippets in your own applications. I found the chapters on blocks and grand central, and objective-c debugging particularly helpful.

If you are a Mac or iOS developer, and wish to complement Apple's excellent documentation with a concise and portable printed handbook, this is the book you ought to get.

More than what is suggested by the title, Objective-C Phrase Book is a very good resource with in-depth information on a variety of topics. It provides a comparison of various idioms used in object-oriented languages, and explains the motivation behind the paradigms used in Objective-C. Topics that are seldom mentioned in other books, such as the philosophy and run-time details of Objective-C (including a comparison of various implementations), are explained in detail and provide very interesting insights. On a cautionary side, the reader is required to have some previous knowledge of object-oriented programming and methodology in order to comprehend all the material presented in this book.

Overall, an excellent reference for object-oriented design concept, and a must-have book for anyone looking to program in Objective-C.

This is a must-have book for your developer library, whether you are new to Objective-C or an experienced coder. For new folks, it is the natural next step after you have learned Objective-C. For the experienced coder, you will appreciate the depth of coverage and code snippets. In addition, the background explanations help you to understand why a feature works, and therefore, how to best use it.

It is one of those rare books that is both incredibly useful and easy to access. The chapters on Blocks and Debugging alone are worth the cost of the book. In fact, the time savings from using the information in the book will more than pay for it many times over. As I read it I found myself wanting to make tweaks to my current App project (even though it is at final candidate stage).

Note that you do need to have a basic understanding of Objective-C to benefit from this book. It also helps to have an understanding of at least one of the frameworks that use it such as iOS for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, or Cocoa on Mac OS X.

So stop waiting, click Buy, and happy coding!

The Objective-C Phrasebook is not what you expect at first, listing the
obvious methods in the API in each category, instead it covers each of
the topics with just the background that allows you to really understand
WHY you should use them and how to approach this. The clever thing is
that the book is not voluminous, yet covers a lot of knowledge in higher
level chunks: how to implement patterns, how to deal with various kinds
of data, and more advanced system stuff. A great addition to my library,
as could be expected from the number one Cocoa reference publisher.

I've been developing in Objective-C for years and teach classes at a local college. However there are many times while coding that I need to look at old code or documentation for even the simplest tasks. You just can't remember every Objective-C class or their method calls. That is where the Objective-C Phrasebook comes in handy. The book won't teach you everything about Objective-C, but it will take a task, show the code and then explain it's function. It will even explain some of the gotcha's as well. If you own Sadun's Developer's Cookbook, then this book should be on your shelf also (or right next to your Mac). More so if you don't have the Cookbook. For those new to developing iPhone and Mac applications, you will find this book invaluable and will help you code and understand quicker. Two thumbs up and 5 stars.
I'm late on my review of this book. It took me time to read it because my wife started reading it also, so we had to share..go figure.

She liked it because it was easy to read and made sense to her, very logical stepping her through the Objective-C process.

I liked it for the code snippets as I am a novice to Objective-C. I liked the background on Objective-C, it brought back things I haven't thought of or heard in a long time. For me it's a great starter book and works well with the Sadun's Developer's Cookbook I have.

I understand it doesn't cover a lot of everything some developers may want, but it is a Phrasebook as the title states.

Now I have to go wrestle it away from my wife, so I can have another go at it.

Thanks for letting a novice review your Phrasebook.
