Geographic information systems (GIS) technology and methods have trans- formed decision-making in society by bringing geographic analysis to the desk- top computer. Although some educators consider GIS to be a promnising means for implementing reform, it has been adopted by less than 2 percent of American high schools. The reasons behind the interest in GIS, its slow implementation, and its effectiveness in teaching and learning are unclear.

I found the way the book is structured, as a series of sample lessons that could be taught in middle or high school, to be a very effective way to teach the functions of ArcMap. You march through the book learning increasingly complex skills, used in realistic contexts.

I, myself, teach third grade, so I won't be using lessons from the book, but I can live with that. My complaints about the book are that it is not indexed, so trying to find that one page that describes how to perform the one function you need is an exercise in frustration. Many of the URLs listed in the lessons are out of date. They're usually close enough that a little searching will pay off, but it wastes time. ESRI (book & software publisher) could solve the problem by maintaining a web site of updated information.

Although I bought the newest edition of the book, it does not contain the newest edition of the software and there are many differences. I am using them in a college class. The computer lab there has ArcMap 10, the book (and therefore my home computer) has ArcMap 9.0. If I want to do anything at home, it is almost like learning two programs. There should be a provision for updating the software.

The program is a powerful, professional level, mapping program, far beyond my needs as an elementary teacher, but I will definitely use it with my students if I can get my school to buy the program.

The book has interesting information and is very detailed. The only problem would be that it is repetitive in the instructions.
