Bell is an incredible author. Fantastic tutorials that were easy to understand and implement. There are better books out there for beginners, but for all you intermediate max users, you should have this book.

This book does teach the reader how to do certain things that come in handy, but you have to know how to get around in MAX to understand it. I found it useful, but only because I had spent the last month figuring out MAX by myself. Some ideas in the book are not particularly helpful, but there are many others that will enhance your pictures, and the CD comes with some useful plugins.

Well I do agree that the book is for intermediate or adavnced users but I never read the stupid manuals (i don't read many manuals, there just annoying) but I got almost every concept in the book. The who gave this book a 2 must be an idiot. Ha! how does it feel to get out-smarted by an 16 year old.

I Hated This Book...
It Was Not A Book Designed For People That Dont Know How To Use 3d Studio MAX. I could bearly get thru the first lesson without finding out everything for myself... Avoid this book if you are a beginner.

As an owner of both 3DS MAX R2.0 and R2.5, it appears this book was written for R2.0. It looks like the publisher replaced all the R2 references with R2.5 at the last second to cash in on the recent R2.5 release (oops, you missed one on pp. 182).
If it were really an R2.5 book, you would have expected to see an explanation of differences between R2 and R2.5 (there wasn't any) and I did 80% of the tutorials in R2. I'm still working on the others, as time allows, to see if there is any R2.5-specific material.
Make it past the hype and you find an enormous wealth of information on 3D design and animation techniques with MAX. Mr. Bell solicits the help of other authors, which brings an interesting perspective to the book.
This book does not waste any space explaining how to use MAX R2 -- that's what the manuals are for. The book opens with an excellent series of tutorials on lighting and materials that contain useful information regardless of your choice of 3D sof! tware.
Numerous practical tips abound in the book (that are clearly highlighted in the margin), plus you get plug-ins, materials, and models! The fact that the book contains useful material for anyone doing 3D work (whether you use MAX or not) makes this a superb follow-on to the first edition. Mr. Bell and his co-authors should be complimented for a job well done!
I did miss the water tutorials from the first book. Oh well, there's always version 3!

Too many cooks can spoil the broth, and that nearly happened here. While the authors are all very knowledgeable 3D professionals, their writing and teaching skills vary widely. Some examples are clearly written and mistake-free; some are not. Those hoping for insights into NURBS modeling should avoid this book like the plague. The alien head and cobra examples, though ambitiously in-depth, do not make clear the "why" of what you are doing and are riddled with awkward phrases, missing steps, and impossible operations, all presented in a folksy tone that quickly grows annoying (I've tackled the cobra example twice, only to give up each time after several days' effort). The publisher's Web site provides an update for this book (a downloadable file called "cobra.zip"). Unfortunately, it merely contains two Max files of the completed cobra (not much help) and not the errata I had desperately hoped for. The CD is what a CD should be, adding value with free plug-ins rather than foisting a bunch of evaluation shareware on you that serves only as advertising revenue for the publishers. I applaud Jon Bell for this.

Let's get something straight: "3D Studio MAX R2.5 f/x" is written for intermediate to advanced MAX users, and not MAX newbies who can't take the time to read the manuals first. It's especially NOT for people like the two reviewers from Virgina and Texas who gave the book less than five stars because it didn't tell them what every single MAX button does. (The VA guy said, "It Was Not A Book Designed For People That Don't Know How To Use 3d Studio MAX." Well, duh! That's what the manuals are for! Read them first and learn how to use the program!) Once you've done that, you'll find that "MAX R2.5 f/x" presents a bunch of cool tutorials, fun effects, great models and texture maps, and loads of free plugins, including one called "Greeble" that's a sci-fi fan's dream. Still the best MAX effects-specific book out there.
As with his first book, Jon has packed this one full of powerful, yet easy to follow tutorials, that are solidly backed by dozens of example files on the accompanying CD-ROM.
The chapters covering the multiple layering of maps and their settings, to achieve various f/x and photo realistic materials, were especially helpful to me. It easily explained complex techniques that have been refined by MAX experts, which unlock the power and depth of the MAX Material Editor. As a one man 3D shop, I don't have time to spend the countless hours of experimentation that it takes to come up with these wonderful techniques. I could have easily spent 10 times as much on a classroom course and not have come away with the lasting knowledge that this book provides, in a beautifully printed reference.
