This book provides reasons for the use of the case method in teacher education and argues that decisions about teacher preparation must be grounded in an understanding of how teachers learn, what they see as sources of teaching knowledge, and how their workplaces influence what and how they will continue to learn. If case studies are to support reflective practice, they must help teachers see the value of systematic investigations and theory. The volume's six chapters are introduced in a foreword by Robert Floden.

The Case Method Think about ways to start the discussion such as using a hypothetical .

Cases are narratives, situations, select data samplings, or statements that present unresolved and provocative issues, situations, or questions (Indiana University Teaching Handbook, 2005). The case method is a participatory, discussion-based way of learning where students gain skills in critical thinking, communication, and group dynamics. Think about ways to start the discussion such as using a hypothetical example or employing the background knowledge of your students. Get students prepared. It takes a fair amount of preparation by both the teacher and the students, but don't forget these benefits (Bruner, 2002)

Taking a broader perspective than that found in most case methods texts, McAninch provides a theoretical and historical analysis of the use of case studies in teacher education. The author links the concept of "clinical consciousness" in teachers to the levels of consciousness posited by Belenky, and applies Dewey's theories to counter the maladaptive perspectives. She then goes on to review case methods models from other fields and, drawing on Schwab's work, to outline and model appropriate for teacher.
