Mathews did an excellent job in chronicling the rise of Jaime Escalante, including a significant amount of background from his youth in Bolivia. It's always fascinating to see what all is involved in the development of the character of famous people. Mathews' story is fascinating, even more so than the movie, as it is closer to the real situation of E LA's Garfield. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 11 years ago. Jaime Escalante was a Bolivian teacher who came to Los Angeles in the 1960s. In 1982, the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which wrote and marked the tests, suspected Garfield High students of cheating. This led to interest from the media and later fame for Escalante as people started to take notice of what was happening at the school.

An inspiring book that proves the American dream is still very much alive. An immigrant teacher from Bolivia, Jaime Escalante achieved remarkable results with his students at Garfield High in East Los Angeles, a school riddled with gang violence. Even more fascinating than Stand and Deliver, the movie based on Escalante's story. An inspiring book that proves the American dream is still very much alive.

I also took from the book the idea of continued determination and discipline to get success As Escalante struggled through hardships in his life, he not only proved himself as a teacher but as an individual.

I also took from the book the idea of continued determination and discipline to get success. I now know that if I work hard enough I can succeed in the class. As Escalante struggled through hardships in his life, he not only proved himself as a teacher but as an individual. Though I am not sure if I would flourish under his direction, in fact I am sure I would not, one cannot doubt the widespread benefits that his students reaped under his tutelage. Though I admire his work ethic and his passion for teaching, he seems to be inflexible and too harsh in his regulations for me.

Chronicles the remarkable life and work of man who, himself and immigrant, coached and inspired underpriviledged Hispanic students thought to be "hopeless" to excel to unprecedented standards in mathematics

Great biography. Goes into much more detail than the movie, "Stand and Deliver", though I think the two complement each other. From the movie which concentrates on the class of 1982 you could almost get the impression that these were a small group of almost hand-picked students, but the book demonstrates that in ensuing years there were hundreds who took the AP exams and not just in calculus and most of whom passed.

Very inspiring and certainly gives the lie to the concept that certain ethnic or socioeconomic groups have inherent limitations. Final chapter does follow-up on some of the 1982 class and shows that the vast majority did well in college and their careers and so this event at Garfield HS wasn't just a fluke based on their teacher's exhortations.

This book should be read by every want-to-be teacher in our American school system today and used as a serious reference guide to those already in the teaching industry whether it be in church, school or any endeavor that is devoted to the art of teaching.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. As a tutor who works with kids who are struggling, it has encouraged me to set the standard high, with my students and my own child.

I have watched the movie "Stand and Deliver" many times in English and Spanish. It never fails to move me, to fill me with a sense of purpose and to inspire me to be a better teacher. However, I must say that this book takes one within the world in which the educational "miracle" happened. This book has energized me and led me to be a better teacher, and I'll bet that it will do the same for any teacher who reads it.
Great!
