Secret Smile by Nicci French.

Sean French and Nicci Gerrard return for their seventh Nicci French thriller, Secret Smile. Why is that man walking so close to me? This does not mean that I have an aversion to scary books. Rachel Cooke welcomes the new arrival. So long as the front door is locked and bolted, there is nothing I like more than a hardback with embossed gold letters and a noose on its cover. A little hot fear followed by the cooling balm of inevitable resolution.

By now, it's an open secret that "Nicci" is the husband-and-wife team of Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, although the jacket here maintains that there is a Nicci French living in. .But gender does become an issue with Secret Smile.

By now, it's an open secret that "Nicci" is the husband-and-wife team of Nicci Gerrard and Sean French, although the jacket here maintains that there is a Nicci French living in Suffolk and that "she is the author of six other bestselling novels". Previously, the team's writing has gleaned a solid male following. As with Rendell and (latterly) Mo Hayder, men are happy to read crime novels by women which are ready to confront the darker recesses of the human psyche.

Nicci French is the pseudonym for the writing partnership of journalists Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. The couple are married and live in Suffolk. Blue Monday was the first thrilling story in the Frieda Klein series, which concludes with Day of the Dead.

You have an affair. You end it. You think it's over. You're wrong. When Miranda Cotton gets home from work to find her new boyfriend, Brendan, reading her diary, she breaks off the relationship and throws him out of her flat. Getting Brendan out of her life, however, is not as easy. Two weeks later, her sister, Kerry, phones her in ecstasy—she's in love. Her new boyfriend is named Brendan. Brendan is back in Miranda's life—with a vengeance. But why has he done this? And what does he want from her? Soon what began as an embarrassment becomes an infestation—and then more terrifying than her worst nightmares.

Every woman should be educated on how sociopaths operate. They, according to THE MASK OF SANITY, can fool anyone including psychiatrists, forensic analysts and in this novel even the police. Who should ABSOLUTELY KNOW BETTER. For you who have daughters I recommend you educate yourself and then educate them. Poor Miranda, NO ONE believed her! I knew almost from the first descriptive sentence that he was evil. How easily we are fooled! Aside from these comments I felt this was a good read and was completely blindsided with the ending! I gave this four stars because I couldn't believe how stupid the police presence was.
Addendum: I just found what looks like a very helpful book in addition to THE MASK OF SANITY. THE SOCIOPATH NEXT DOOR by Martha Stout. Available here at Amazon.

I LOVE HER STYLE OF WRITING, I HAVE READ EVERYTHING SHE HAS WRITTEN. THIS IS DEFINATELY HER WORST BOOK. THERE WERE SO MANY THINGS ABOUT THE PLOT THAT WERE JUST PLAIN STUPID. IT WAS LIKE SOMETHING FROM JERRY SPRINGER. THREE WOMAN WHO ARE CLOSE TO EACH OTHER ALL GO OUT WITH THE SAME GUY. TWO OF THEM AGREE TO MARRY THIS GUY IN A MATTER OF WEEKS. THEN THE MAIN CHARACTER MIRANDA GETS TALKED INTO LETTING THIS PSYCHO MOVE IN WITH HER. WHEN THINGS GET REALLY BAD SHE DOESN'T EVEN TELL THEM TO MOVE OUT SHE IS THE ONE THAT MOVES. OK SO SHE FINALLY GETS THIS GUY OUT OF HER LIFE AND WHAT DOES SHE DO. TRACKS HIM DOWN AND PULLS HIM BACK INTO HER LIFE!! THEN THERE IS AN INCIDENT IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM WHERE THE POLICE LET THE LAWYER OF THE ACCUSED INTO HER CUBICLE TO YELL AT HER ABOUT WHAT A LIAR SHE IS. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. IT GOES ON AND ON. ALMOST EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PLOT IS RIDICULOUS. IF YOU WANT TO READ A REALLY GOOD BOOK BY HER GET "KILLING ME SOFTLY". I WOULDN'T BOTHER TO READ THIS ONE.

This book stays in your mind. It's a story about an average girl who meets what seems to be a nice guy. But he's not. Her situation spins so out of control that the reader thinks that there's no way she can get her life back to normal. If you've been, or know someone who is, in an abusive relationship - the story is chilling. The story reminds us all that there are truly evil people in the world, and that the next person we meet could be that person.

I recommend this book all the time, and pick up copies to give as gifts. It was one of the first I put on my Kindle. I DO NOT recommend the awful movie made from the book.

I enjoyed this book, but had real difficulty imagining a plot like this playing out in real life. A guy hopping around from lover to lover - all of whom happen to be in the same circle and it being accepted by family and friends seems a bit unbelievable. After a while the reader just finds him/herself waiting for a resolution. As an American some of the language required frequent usage of the dictionary to uncover special meanings. This is a decent read, but it just doesnt seem real. Fiction should have a grain of reality.

This was a super creepy page turner. I was hooked from the first sentence. French knows how to build suspense and keep you engaged throughout. I have to say, though, that this novel didn't really stay with me after I finished it. It's a great airplane book or vacation book, but it doesn't have the depth of her Frieda Klein books. If you're looking for a fun thriller, though, this is it.

The husband/wife writing team that is billed as "Nicci French" was the perfect team to construct this intense, shocking story of romantic obsession. Why? Well, because the two main characters are a man and a woman, and we get to know both of them very, very well. The double-gendered authors get the inner workings of both the male and female minds exactly right. The novel's gimmick is simple: after their break-up, one member of a young British couple begins to stalk, torment, and threaten the other--but exactly who is doing what to whom? That's a good question, and the answer (and the ultimate solution to the problem) will surprise and disturb you.

I've read all the Nicci French books now, and this hypnotic little gem is my hands-down favorite. You may never look at your loved ones in the same way again. Enjoy (but leave the lights on!).

The book was well written, however the plot was disturbing because it was frustrating for the reader to know something bad was going to happen and the police seemed incapable of trusting the victims' requests for help.
I was annoyed by the stupidity of the characters. I don't mind reading books about imperfect people but the 'heroine' of the story and her family are just plain stupid.
