Chapter ONE. The Multnomah County Courthouse occupied the entire block opposite Lownsdale Park.

Chapter ONE.

Gone, But Not Forgotten rocketed Phillip Margolin into the select company of million-selling novelists.

Margolin's latest is part courtroom drama, part psychological thriller, part murder mystery, and part love story. But most of all, it's a whopping good read. Young lawyer Tracy Cavanaugh has just spent a year clerking for an Oregon Supreme Court justice and is ready for the big time. Gone, But Not Forgotten rocketed Phillip Margolin into the select company of million-selling novelists. Here he displays again the same genius for best-selling suspense in another intricate, breathtaking thriller of multiple murder in the legal community of the Pacific Northwest.

I just had to give this book a 5 star. Why aren't I reading more Phillip Margolin? This book was fascinating, kept my interest, and really fooled me when I thought I had it figured out! Excellent!

It was with this book that I realized why I like Margolin so much. He is a criminal defense attorney himself and they tend to be the pariahs of the legal community, at least where the public is concerned.

On either side of the street were friendly white houses that were once residences but now served as offices for the staff. Looming over the charming houses and their neatly trimmed lawns was the. squat, square bulk of the prison. squat, square bulk of the prison with its thick eggyolk-yellow walls, barbed-wire fences and gun towers. I became a fan of Phillip Margolin after reading "Gone but not Forgotten." That only continued with what I call his "branches of government trilogy" and has carried through to his independent novels, like this one, After Dark. Tracy Cavanaugh has just finished clerking with the Supreme Court of Oregon and accepts a job with the brilliant and enigmatic defense attorney Matthew Reynolds. She immediately finds herself embroiled in a high profile death penalty case when Reynolds is retained to defend a deputy district attorney against a capital murder charge. The twists and turns that have become trademark Margolin to me are present, and there's nice little twist at the end that's worth waiting for.

It was with this book that I realized why I like Margolin so much. He is a criminal defense attorney himself and they tend to be the pariahs of the legal community, at least where the public is concerned. Most stories I have read tend to play off that image, unscrupulous ambulance chasers that are publicity hounds and will do anything for a buck. Margolin humanizes his defense attorneys, making them brilliant and passionate about their cause and about the American justice system. They truly believe that everyone deserves a fair trial, and he manages to do this without making the other side look manipulative or incompetent. It brings some integrity into the profession as well as the series.

Phillip Margolin is my new favourite author. This is the second book of his that I've enjoyed. It was interesting enough that I stayed up until 3 am reading it. I had to be up for work the next day too! Twists and turns and unexpected events. My only gripe is that his newer books are expensive

Picked this up for free on a promotional event. Not as good as "Gone but not Forgotten" but still one of his better books.

Terrific book! This author in his heyday was unstoppable at weaving a mystery. I think in a way this is better than Gone But Not Forgotten. It captured my interest and held on until the very end. Be prepared for some twists and turns!
