Extraordinary Powers book. I decided to read a book by Joseph Finder based on the recommendation of a good friend who mostly reads the same authors I do (Child, Baldacci, Connelly, et. I randomly chose this book based on its immediate availability as an e-book. I was quickly put off when I discovered that the book was 638 pages long as I don't care to read books that are that lengthy. Normally 400 pages or so is my preferred limit.

Harrison Sinclair, director of the CIA, has been killed in a car accident. His son-in-law, Ben Ellison -- an attorney and ex-agent -- instantly hears rumors of sinister forces within the Agency. The hunt for the truth will rush Ben headlong into a web of conspiracy beyond his control, where he is compelled by an artful, inescapable maneuver back into the employ of the CIA, and lured into a top-secret espionage project in telepathy that will endow him with "extraordinary powers" . . . ."Spectacular . . . The action is unrelenting . . . Electrifying." Boston Sunday Herald

Ben Ellison is a Boston patent lawyer who is a former CIA agent who had lost his first wife to an explosion engineered by the KGB. He possesses an eidetic memory and, after an unusually powerful MRI, the ability to read minds — and, yes, through his second wife, he is now the son-in-law of the former director of the CIA . . . who is “accidentally” murdered, triggering Ellison’s return to the espionage game. If you’re a fan of espionage thrillers and you can get past this collection of highly unlikely circumstances that constitute the novel’s premise, you’ll love Joseph Finder’s Extraordinary Powers.

Once you swallow your qualms and suspend disbelief, you’re likely to be swept along at warp-speed in a danger-filled chase for the truth through Italy, Switzerland, France, and Canada, as Ellison and his second wife, Molly, bit by bit uncover one of the most audacious capers in history. The tale is full of shock and awe, unexpected twists and turns, and a shattering climax. It’s standard thriller fare but extremely well executed. Suspense? Yes, in spades.

For my money — and I’ve certainly spent enough of it on his books — Joseph Finder is one of the best of the many thriller writers active today. Suspicion, Buried Secrets, High Crimes, and The Zero Hour (all reviewed here) are all tightly plotted, firmly grounded in contemporary reality, and suspenseful to the last drop. I felt the same about several other Finder novels I had read before I began this blog. (In my more recent reading, I was disappointed only in Vanished and The Moscow Club.)
Rare
I am a big fan of Joseph Finder and wouldn't miss a book of his. His plots are complex, his characters interesting, sometimes complicated, always believable, and he writes terrific suspense. I like the fact that he's a smart writer, a lover of words and an author whose books always contain accurate background and location information and are well researched and full of facts that I find enhance the reading experience. My one criticism of this book--and this would not be a problem for many, I am sure--is that Mr. Finder spends the first 42% of the book laying the background for the story, in this case the history and use of ESP as a "spy" tool. I wanted about half this much info, and was just itching for him to get to the meat of the plot: recovering stolen money and uncovering and exposing CIA criminal activity. The pace --and suspense--pick up considerably in the second half, and there are many twists and turns and surprises to keep the reader turning the pages in anticipation. As with anything Mr. Finder writes, I highly recommend this book!

In the past, I've enjoyed many of Joseph Finder's exciting and compelling stories. This novel, however, is a very complex, hard to read novel which aggravated me the more I got into the novel. I found it boring, with too many unnecessary descriptions which slow a reader down. Reading this book is like trying to get out of quick sand. I'm so disappointed especially after reading "Plan B" which halted before we even knew what Plan B was! Maybe the next novel by Joe Finder I'll find more exciting. I hope so.

Joseph Finder is my all time favorite author. But I do not care for this particular subject matter. I am half way through the book and waiting for some excitement to hit. I am hanging in because his books always have a great ending.

This book was published in 1993; both technology and world events have changed mightily since then. However, Finder pours it on in an action-filled plot with plenty of insight into both the world of spies and the world of the heart.

Ironically, in a time of concern over NSA and Google Glass privacy, the motivating theme of this 20-year-old book--what if you could read the thoughts of others?--is hands-down relevant in ways the author might not have expected.

Without giving any spoilers, Finder has some strong female characters, something I always appreciate reading..

This one is a page- flipping spell binding thriller. Finder sometimes will through in an unusual angle...in the midst of a thriller. This one has that extra element, but adds your international intrigue and conspiracy angle. Add in ten billion in missing gold...and you won't be able to put it down!
Survivors
I have read several of Joseph Finder's books and found them excellent. This book however was awful. So many descriptions of so many people in so many places with so many weird problems. I can't believe the number of people that were killed. You would think somebody would have figured out with all of these high-end folks getting killed that something was going on. All in all one of the worst books I have ever read. I will continue reading Finder since his other books were fascinating. This one however was a real bomb
Another favorite author of mine, I think Joseph Finder is that rare writer who can write about any subject and the reader is turning pages more quickly than we want. As much as I try to make the experience last longer, I cannot help but finish his books way too fast. This book deals with something most of can't really relate to regarding matters of perception, yet Finder pulls us in and makes everything believable in the most delicious way....an excellent read I would strongly recommend.
