In 1941 at the age of eighteen he joined the Royal Navy; two-and-a-half years spent aboard a cruiser was later to give him the background for HMS Ulysses, his first novel, the outstanding documentary novel on the war at sea. After the war, he gained an English Honours degree at Glasgow University, and became a school master. In 1983 he was awarded a . itt from the same university. By the early 1970s he was one of the top 10 bestselling authors in the world, and the biggest-selling Briton.
Alistair Maclean 's books always resonate with one dialogue in this book, when Duc is about to walk into a situation . Caravan to Vaccares is one of the worst Alistair MacLean novels I have ever read. It has a few humorous moments, but otherwise wasn’t really worth reading.

The narrative is bloated, the dialogue is full of pointless, meaningless conversation, the characters are static and completely superficial and the plot is dull and disappointingly implausible.

The first time I read this book was many years ago and, perhaps at that time I found it difficult to put down and may have given it a 5 but water has flowed down the rivers since then so this second reading I feel that perhaps the storyline is not up to the standards of his other books.
Alistair Stuart MacLean (Scottish Gaelic: Alasdair MacGill-Eain; 21 April 1922 – 2 February 1987) was a Scottish novelist who wrote popular thrillers and adventure stories. His works include The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra and Where Eagles Dare – all three were made into popular films. He also wrote two novels under the pseudonym Ian Stuart. His books are estimated to have sold over 150 million copies, making him one of the best-selling fiction authors of all time.
