In 1941 at the age of eighteen he joined the Royal Navy; two-and-a-half years spent aboard a cruiser was later to give him the background for HMS Ulysses, his first novel, the outstanding documentary novel on the war at sea. After the war, he gained an English Honours degree at Glasgow University, and became a school master. In 1983 he was awarded a . itt from the same university. By the early 1970s he was one of the top 10 bestselling authors in the world, and the biggest-selling Briton.

Alistair Maclean 's books always resonate with one dialogue in this book, when Duc is about to walk into a situation . Caravan to Vaccares is one of the worst Alistair MacLean novels I have ever read. It has a few humorous moments, but otherwise wasn’t really worth reading.

Alistair Maclean 's books always resonate with one dialogue in this book, when Duc is about to walk into a situation he has nothing to do with, in front of his perplexed girl-friend -. "But you can't just barge in -" "Nonsense. I am the Duc de Croytor. The narrative is bloated, the dialogue is full of pointless, meaningless conversation, the characters are static and completely superficial and the plot is dull and disappointingly implausible.

The corridor leading to his bedroom was thickly carpeted and his footfalls soundless. He was reaching for the handle of the door when he heard voices coming from inside the room. ed, just one – Cecile’s – and it came only intermittently: the tone of her voice was readily recognizable but the muffling effect of the intervening door was too great to allow him to distinguish the words. He was about to lean his ear against the woodwork when a chambermaid carrying an armful of sheets came round a corner of the corridor

MacClean is in fine form with this one. It takes place in the sixties or maybe the seventies but Despite todays very changed political climate, the story comes across as very believable. This tightly woven thriller would still ring true, even if such modern conveniences as cell phones and the internet were added.

The first time I read this book was many years ago and, perhaps at that time I found it difficult to put down and may have given it a 5* but water has flowed down the rivers since then so this second reading I feel that perhaps the storyline is not up to the standards of his other books. The action is good, exciting even but.... At times it's a little confusing. Don't let that put you off, it will pass your time as it did for me the first time sitting around a swimming pool in some far off resort.

I read all of Maclean's books in my younger days, and was absolutely enthralled by all of them! I wanted to revisit them, and this is an excellent edition. Time does march on however...although the storytelling and spirit of adventure was superb, there was no depth to the plot or characters; it was like a James Bond escapade, although the settings are a bit more realistic. Nothing wrong with a good yarn, but it is quite dated in my opinion; sort of like watching "Mad Men" with some stereotypes and fairly predictable behavior and outcomes. Nevertheless, not a bad way to spend a few days reliving youthful memories...

Perhaps not MacLean's best work but second level MacLean adventures are still better than most anything else.

Read this none for the first time ... Plenty of action and a twist or two along the line ... Gypsy criminals and a buff to fight ... What more could you want ...

I love Alistair Maclean stories and this is one of his best. Yes, kind of a stilted English conversational tone, but I think that just adds to its charm. Just great fantasy with many twists and turns.

Exciting story. Enjoyable reading, interesting characters.
Alistair MacLean writes beautifully. His earlier works are better and less formula driven..this is one of his better works.
