Stout Re. ex Stout Over My Dead Body Chapter One The bell rang and I went to the front and opened the door and there she was. I said good-morning. She turned off the smile and went and sat down with the book, and appeared to be absorbed in it a few minutes later when, the checking finished, I jiggled the handful of cards neatly together and departed with them, and mounted the two flights of carpeted stairs to the top floor and the steeper flight to the roof level, where the entire.

Over My Dead Body is the seventh Nero Wolfe detective novel by Rex Stout. The story first appeared in abridged form in The American Magazine (September 1939). The novel was published in 1940 by Farrar & Rinehart, Inc. In Over My Dead Body Rex Stout begins to explore Wolfe's Montenegrin background. By 1939, of course, the Wolfe/Goodwin books had become an established series but Wolfe's youth had yet to be clarified.

The Rex Stout Nero Wolfe stories are old detective stories that are well written, usually without obvious conclusions and very comforting to those of us who are fans. Over my dead body pits Archie and Wolfe against at least a few categories of evils that still persist-quick profit financial types and those who would harm a society (not the USA) for their personal gain. These are old and set in New York of the past. For the history and popular culture evidenced alone, they are entertaining.

He finished inspecting the thing, folded it with deliberation, and stuck it in his pocket. Miss Lovchen extended a hand.

This is one of my favorites. I love the plot, the characters, and the ending. If you're a Nero Wolfe fan, this is one of Stout's best, in my opinion. It's very clever and the motive and plot twist are very hard to predict, which makes them even more interesting. This book is also great because it reveals something about Wolfe that nobody would have guessed, and it is interesting to see how both he and the other person involved handle it. Archie is good in this book too; he provides some good comic relief at certain parts. I highly recommend it & think any Nero Wolfe fan will really enjoy it.

I'm not a huge Nero Wolfe fan, but the books are well-written and entertaining. This one involves a young foreign woman who comes to Wolfe for help, but whose problems are much more complicated than they first appear.

It's the eve of WWII and while the US is still technically neutral, anti-German sentiment is running high and even insular Americans are figuring out that this ISN'T just a European shooting match. The Balkans are a hot-bed of intrigue even in peaceful times, so it's a certainty that they are the first ones drawn into the conflict and their fondness for playing both ends against the middle is shocking to straight-forward Americans.

Wolfe's long-ago involvement in Montenegro politics comes back to haunt him. He's no longer an idealistic youth, but a cynical middle aged man who wants to be left alone to raise his Orchids. But can he ignore the long-lost adopted daughter who shows up on his doorstep? And is there really any possibility that Archie will end up as his son-in-law?

There's the usual cast of characters - Wolfe, Archie, Fritz the cook/butler, Inspector Cramer and a host of world-weary not-too-bright NYPD cops. It's a fast read and the author includes some shrewd social commentary at no extra charge. Stout was the ultimate professional and you can't go far wrong with any of his books.

I read many Nero Wolfe books a long while ago but, apparently, not all of them. How wonderful to revisit the series and find "New" stories. This one doesn't disappoint. This one shows a more human side to Wolfe and Archie is always terrific. So glad I found it and so glad to know there are more stories yet to discover. Thanks Kindle!!

After stumbling on author Rex Stout, I have been reading the Nero Wolfe Mysteries in chronological order and have thus far found each one thoroughly enjoyable. I love the characters each of whom are concreted in my imagination because of Stout's amazing ability to build up and define the characters. Archie is so amusing with his slick, tough talk. Stout has to be brilliant to provide the intellect of Nero Wolfe. The New York setting is fun, particularly since it is in the late 30s and early 40s. Highly recommended for light, enjoyable cozy mysteries.

A treat for Wolfe fans and history buffs, this is one of the more tightly plotted, convoluted stories in the series. As always, the characters are made flesh and blood, and rewardingly conscious, with the interplay between them a never ending source of fascination and entertainment.
And, of course, there's Wolf, Archie, Cramer, Fritz and the usual suspects...
A detective/crime novel with literary merits that invites deep reading - and rewards it.

Just want to add my voice to those raving over this and every one of the Nero Wolfe's I have read. The dialogue is sharp, the narrative economical and fast paced, the mystery plot twists and turns in a very satisfying way, the characters are wonderful - in all aspects everything you could ask for. gcm
Archie Goodwin is one of the best crime fiction characters ever created. His interaction with his boss, Nero Wolfe, and the police and their clients is often hilarious and always interesting. Rex Stout, writing in the 30's, 40's and 50's was way ahead of his time in explaining the rights of citizens when confronted with police. Nero Wolfe demanded that the police respect the US Constitution and the rights of citizens when dealing with the police. He was way ahead of the Supreme Court decision in the Miranda ruling. The whole Nero Wolfe collection is a treasure. It's also a colorful portrait of Manhattan at that time. Plot it Yourself is one of Rex Stouts best.
