Miss Silver was silent. Her face was grave and composed. She thought Adriana Ford was talking to convince herself, and she wondered whether the effect would be more than a transitory one.

A star of the London stage urgently needs Miss Silver’s help: From a first-rate storyteller (The Daily Telegraph). Mrs. Smith is not the first woman who has come to Maud Silver, the genteel private detective, claiming that someone is trying to kill her. She tells a story of attempted poisoning, a shove down a flight of stairs, and a house full of relatives who might want to push her out of the way. Miss Silver is intrigued, not least because this is not Mrs. Smith.

Wentworth also wrote 34 books outside that series. She won the Melrose prize in 1910 for her first novel A Marriage Under The Terror, set in the French Revolution The Silent Pool, 1954. The morbid discovery of a corpse in the garden pool is made more than once in this delightful Miss Silver mystery. The setting is the country estate of the famous actress Adriana Ford, retired for some years now. No one is sure of Adriana's age, but eighty seems likely. No one is sure either exactly who will benefit from her will when she dies or by how much, but her various relatives and hangers-on are eager for the event. They all live with her.

The household is deliciously dysfunctional, seething with petty resentments and jealousies. Nobody likes anybody else, and they tend to spy on each other. Adriana had earlier confided to Miss Silver that she suspects someone is trying to kill her, and when the first body is found in the pool, she invites Miss Silver to visit to her country house and look into things.

Amidst the disagreeable behavior of the inhabitants of Adriana's household, one fairly normal couple is engaged in a wacky courtship. He is pursuing her avidly, while she resists tenaciously. They are in love -- and their witty adversarial wooing offers a nice respite from the tensions building up in the household. Patricia Wentworth generally rewards her readers with a charming romance to contrast with the twisted passions of the murderer.

Wentworth's flair for storytelling is very much in evidence in The Silent Pool. And Miss Silver's compulsive knitting, her Victorian principles and her Edwardian wardrobe continue to be amusing and endearing.

The heroine of this piece is barely in the book at all till the almost end of the book making me wonder how she could have been so very sure who actually did the killing?

The characters for the most part were so unlikeable I wondered why the woman who owned the big house allowed them to live there. It was her house so why was she hiding in her room? The plot creeped along filled with interminable talking from the house guests till it became a very simple plot one that bored me.

English mysteries are a favorite of mine in book form & movies but I must admit there were quite a few sentences spoke between the would be lovers that made no sense to me at all! Nor did some of the clothing like jumpers with skirts?

In all I won't read another one of Patricia Wentworth books as I found this dissatisfying unlike say the Georgette Heyer books I've read.

Patricia Wentworth gives us another 'Killings in the Old Mansion' book with an assortment of well delineated characters, and Miss
Silvers in the background to give it the flavor of a series book. Her Central figure is another interesting woman, a Grande Dame of the British Stage, now retired and elderly in all but spirit and appearance. She is Mistress of a family menage which has its share of offbeat characters and misfits. When finally she comes to believe someone is out to kill her, she calls upon Miss Silver to advise..without taking her advice nor employing her. Nonetheless, as Miss Silver warned, things among her charges begin to get seriously out of hand, so that an emergency phone call is made asking the redoubtable private enquiry agent to come to her, in the country, of course, to clarify the situation and help her take appropriate action. Nonetheless, there is murder with Miss Silvers then taking on the role of adviser to the police.
As usual, I found the series entry not of the first rank among that excellent group of writers of the British Empire ( Marsh was from New Zealand) who were at the heart of the Classic Mystery. However, she is a member in very good standing. As usual, an admonition to those more addicted to styles in the Mystery which are of more recent vintage: the actions of love are implied rather than explicitly physical, the violence is briefly described and more implied than amplified, and patient reading is expected. If you are not attuned to the style, this is not for you.

A retired famous film star has a house full of deceitful relatives eager to sponge off her and would be very happy if she die so they could have her fortune with no strings attached. When she suspects that someone is trying to poison her, she goes to the author's famed governess turned private detective Miss Silver for advice. But in the beginning, she ignores Miss Silver's warning to be careful and instead plans for merriment by hosting a party at her lovely estate. Things take a bad turn when one of the guests turns up dead, her head smashed in, her lifeless body floating in the pool...As Miss Silver uses her ingenious investigative skills to find out who's the murderer among the many house occupants and guests, she suspects that perhaps it was a case of deadly mistaken identity, with the film star the real targeted victim...intensified suspense occurs with Miss Silver trying to find the murderer while avoiding any more murders from happening again.
The book has a great combination of mystery and romance, that makes it both exciting yet sweet. I recommend it highly, it's very entertaining. This is in a similar genre/style to Agatha Christie, also another of my favorite authors.
