The Will and the Deed is delightfully well written. All the business with the will that doesn't provide what people expect is so much fiddly-dee, and there are improbable things all over the place.

The Will and the Deed is delightfully well written. And the mystery itself antagonized me (in a good way). I was trying so hard to think outside the box to solve it, that I didn't see her sneak up behind me and pop a bigger box over my head. She obviously knows how anyone who's read a mystery or two before approaches something like this.

The second book in the series is even better than the first, which was also very, very good!

Set in the early 1950s Brighton (England), Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens and his team are searching for two missing children. The snow of the pre-Christmas season is heightening the anxiety. The two children, a girl and a boy, have been missing for a few days and many fear the worst. The last time they were seen was on their way to the sweet shop.

Annie, the precocious young girl and her best friend, Mark are inseparable; she writes plays based on fairy tales and all their friends act in them. Annie likes stories with a twist. The two children are found together surrounded by candy like Hansel and Gretel, the topic of Annie's play.

At the same time, Max Mephisto is back in Brighton acting in a pantomime. The connections between the children and the members of the cast and a murder from 1912 become apparent and the two friends work together.

This book is a great mystery because it gives us not only an intriguing puzzle with a terrific cast of characters but also because it delves deeply into the mysteries of love, marriage, heart, friendship, and the emotions!
