another exciting mystery with a healthy serving of the supernatural. Written with great delineation and range, Roberts’ cast of diverse characters continues to jump off the page.

Tough, laconic Brit private eye Joe Milo is up against the forces of occult evil in this tense, witty and cold-blooded chiller by the author of KILL CITY USA and THE WHORE OF BABYLON. Private Eye Joe Milo’s hangover wasn’t improved by the clients waiting at his London office. The Russian madam’s sister was missing – sucked into a supernatural swamp by Satanists and the Forces of Darkness, Olga says. The claimed familial link to Rasputin didn’t help his mood either. Nor did Tanya, her ex-Spetsnaz minder with a Soviet attitude. The first corpse turns up in Paris. He finds it. Actually – he pulled the trigger. The next victim, ritually mutilated, turns up in a garden square near his apartment, addressed to him. The cops aren’t impressed by Milo’s alibi, with an ex-Police Commissioner the Sergeant in the Occult Order, the Temple of Baphomet (the ungodly idol worshipped by the medieval Knights Templar). The Sergeant’s buddy, Grigory Zeltin, is its Grand Master. And he needs a special bell cast for the upcoming carnal rite. Even then things might have been OK, but Milo falls for Zeltin’s daughter. And Joe and his enigmatic sidekick Jonah are about to enter the jaws of hell in this deliciously dark novel. Praise from KIRKUS REVIEWS for THE BELL OF GIRARDIUS “An action-packed adventure with the interminably charming and witty Joe Milo and his Jamaican sidekick Jonah ... another exciting mystery with a healthy serving of the supernatural ... Written with great delineation and range, Roberts’ cast of diverse characters continues to jump off the page. While Jonah volleys easily between lovable and hard-as- nails, Milo stays true, armed with a sharp wit, endless charm and a penchant for finding trouble ... the author edifies on all things satanic ... Another successful Joe Milo experience.”

In Warren Roberts' second novel, The Bell of Girardius, his protagonist, English private eye Joe Milo is engaged by a Russian woman named Olga ("blonde, blunt end of her forties") whose younger sister has gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Olga's credentials consist of minty-fresh US hundred dollar bills enclosed in high class hotel envelopes. Her minder, Tanya is of indeterminate age but has a physique that could kick-start a London double decker bus.

Roberts' fast-paced, witty and literate narrative moves the action along as Milo's investigation takes him from London to Paris and back with side trips into espionage and the occult, bringing him face to face with corruption at high levels of British aristocracy and the secret intelligence establishment. He and his formidable Jamaican sidekick, Jonah, take on the psychic (and psychotic) leader of a satanic cult determined to make a human sacrifice on an auspicious date using the beautiful twin sister of one of the cult's high priestesses as the offering. In the climactic ritual scene Milo finds himself on the altar as well.

Once again, Milo's wisecracks come fast and furious, punctuated by Jonah's pointed repartee as they tangle with Albanian and Serbian heavies whose neck sizes exceed their IQ's. This time, Milo and Jonah receive backup from Milo's Miami partner, certain London police personnel, and other specialists who know how to skirt the boundaries of the law in the furtherance of justice. As you would expect in classic noir crime fiction, in the course of their adventures they also encounter beautiful women who find them irresistible.

If you read Roberts' first novel, Kill City USA, and liked it, you will enjoy being reacquainted with Milo and Jonah as they vanquish their adversaries with wit and brute force. If this is the first time you meet them, my guess is that you will soon be looking for more Joe Milo adventures when the mystery of Girardius is resolved.

OK, so I liked it, but would you? See my review of Kill City USA for some background on me that may be helpful.

This is the second novel by Kiwi Warren Roberts, who lives in London. It reminds me of the classic Dennis Wheatley occult novels which I read in my teens. The novel's hard-core antagonists are part of a clandestine group, The Temple Of Baphomet, who derive their name and sinister purpose from the idol supposedly worshipped in secret by the medieval Knights Templar. In The Bell of Girardius, Milo and his sidekick Jonah get sucked into a supernatural swamp of ungodly European Satanists, together with a kaleidoscopic and sexy sidshow of colourful supporting characters. This book does what it says on the cover, being a deliciously dark novel. A real page-turner.

As I am a fan of series, when I heard that Mr Roberts had penned another novel with Milo and Jonah, I thought I'd check it out. Yes, the boys are back in town. This time they have gotten themselves involved in with a satanic cult. Lots of allusions to mythology and to Catholicism--makes for an interesting read. Watch out if vulgar language offends you--there's plenty of that herein.

I had read Kill City USA by the same writer and a friend who is right into these books offered me his copy of this one. Once again I was hooked by the story and I also got right into it. I decribe it as one of those 'in my dreams' tales of adventures which men fantasise about and leave you feeling well entertained at the end. And what's more my wife also thoroughly enjoyed it!

Hi, I dont normally write reviews but just thought I should show my appreciation of a great read. This is an excellent book, based in London, it gave you a real sense of it being close to home and a book you could relate to. Joe Milo seems a very likable character and the book is very fast moving. All in all an excellent read.

Having enjoyed the author's first book I found this one even better. It has a good plot with occult overtones in the style of Dan Browne. Sexy, it would appeal to women as well as men. A raunchy thriller
Warren has recast a classic Dennis Wheatley novel for the 21st Century. The pace never flags and it left me wanting another story of the occult from this author.
