Wine Country Mystery . книга The Merlot Murders. It was my lucky day for men wearing the wrong shoes.

Wine Country Mystery /. Crosby . Greg turned toward the noise of the gun hitting the floor and slipped on a wet patch of concrete. He lost his balance as his legs went out from under him and banged the back of his head against the metal corner of a stand of wine casks. He hit the floor, moaning, with a hand covering his mouth. Somehow he missed me. The bullet hit a wine cask, which sprang a leak like a geyser, shooting red wine over both of us. He slumped to the ground and the gun fell from his hand. I hooked the golf club around it and putted it to where I could pick it up.

Having read and enjoyed Ellen Crosby's Sophie Medina mysteries, I was looking forward to reading this first book in her Wine Country series-- even if I don't like wine. I found The Merlot Murders to be every bit as intelligently written and absorbing as Multiple Exposure and Ghost Image.

Lucie Montgomery is a complex character, and the plot certainly isn't short of family dynamics with her obnoxious brother Eli, his greedy wife, and their gullible little sister. There's also a head vintner on the property whose motivations aren't very clear.

Added to the first-rate mystery are fascinating snippets of the history of wine making in Virginia. Between this series and Martin Walker's series set in France, I have a feeling that I'm going to end up being a very knowledgeable oenophobe. Crosby also gives an outline of Lucie's family history as well as the house and vineyard. This information put me firmly in Lucie's No Sale camp, but it also made me wonder why no one else in the family felt the same way.

See? Although the mystery is taken care of through the course of The Merlot Murders, I'm left with questions about Lucie and her family, and this is definitely going to make me continue reading the series. Bring on the chardonnay!

After reading a later book in the series, I was impressed enough to go back and read this, which is the series' book #1. This was another enjoyable murder mystery with a beautifully created setting and lots of well-developed characters. For the most part, this was also a good stand-alone novel - however after the climax, the story ended too abruptly - it needed more to make the story feel complete. Hence the 3 stars. Too many novels nowadays are just set ups for the next book in the series, and so the endings are less satisfying and leave the reader feeling cheated - a real pet peeve of mine. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this novel enough to plan on reading the next one.

I'm always surprised when I find a new mystery or mystery series that's good. It's rare. Lots of information about the wine making process and history, especially the history of wine making in Virginia. Like any good mystery, the characters interest you and you want to see how their desires and weaknesses play out especially as they relate to the murder. Will definitely read her books again especially if they feature the main character of this one. Would like to see how she develops and so will you. Not what I refer to as an 'airport' novel, a quick, light read to distract you from a tiresome commute, but not Ruth Rendell either. A bedtime mystery? A rainy day mystery? Perhaps. No. A good book to take with you on vacation (for after arriving at your destination). It will absorb and relax you in your down time but not so intense that it's a distraction.

It was a pleasure to travel to Virginia to see the burgoning wine industry through the eyes of a dedicated landowner. There was enough winemaking lore to educate the casual reader without becoming pedantic and boring.

The first novel in a series often has to include a lot of exposition to explain the characters and their relationships to each other. Crosby did not go overboard with this but offered glimpses of of interaction for future books in this series.

The ending felt rushed which made me give this debut four stars instead of five. I appreciate a well developed resolution and want to know both motivations and outcomes. In this instance I had a "you're kidding" moment because the villainry seemed a little contrived.

I am looking forward to continuing this series and hope to see more depth to the characters of Mia and Eli. They seemed a little one dimensional in this book.

We had never read Ellen Crosby. My wife had bought The Riesling Retribution and we enjoyed it so we bought all the remaining ones in the series.
We both liked The Merlot Murders very much and am sure we will enjoy all the others. Enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountain setting as well as the Civil war references.
Good characters including brother Eli, always broke trying to support Brandi his gold digger wife. Thelma, who knows everything going on in town. Her childhood friend, Kit and assorted others in a small town.
A very good series.

I love wine know the VA wine country pretty well, so wanted to like this, but the winemaking info is preachy, the plot thin and obvious, and the characters just pickled in 1950s gender stereotypes. (Heroine is plucky hut keeps falling for bad boys, but how do you tell the good guy? He's the one who talks rough -- kind-0f a Marlboro man -- but doesn't assault her when he gets the chance

The book was good for an introduction to the series. Loved the wine growing information. Murderer was not too obvious. book arrived in a timely manner. However, I thought I was buying a Kindle book. When my receipt email came I saw I had clicked the wrong button and was getting a paperback. In the space of minutes it was already in shipping and I could not change my order. This paperback retails for $6.99 and I was charged $7.99 + shipping for a total of over $12!! The kindle version is $5.99. Buyer beware. Watch the pricing on paperback books that you can buy at any bookstore for less.
When her father dies mysteriously, a crippled woman returns home from France to find their Virginia wine-making plantation in shambles and her money-strapped siblings eager to sell. Though broke, our Southern belle, like Scarlett at Tara, is determined to save the family estate. But another death and several attempts on her life suggest that there are nefarious forces at work--but toward what end? This engaging novel has more substance than others in the "cozy mystery" genre and is thus more rewarding for the serious reader. The info on wine-making and grapes is an added plus. Highly recommended.
