s/t: an intimate portrait of the last days of the Russian imperial family compiled from the papers of their English tutor, Charles Sydney Gibbes This book is a good read for both newbies to the Romanovs as well as buffs. I liked it and am glad I read it. I had a difficult time, because of his lack of experience, accepting the fact that a peasant farmer was given such an important position with the Romanovs; and, since I know how their story ended, I had a hard time accepting Boyne's rendition.

Of all the members of the Imperial family, she was the one with whom I had enjoyed the least contact since my arrival in St Petersburg. The Tsar himself was always friendly and personable, even remembering my name most of the time, which I took as a mark of great honour. He suffered greatly over the progress of the war, however, and this was reflected on his face, which was lined and dark-eyed. His days were spent in his study in consultation with his generals, whose company he relished, or with the leaders of the Duma, whose very existence he seemed to loathe.

A book by the English tutor of the children of Nicholas and Alexandra of Russia. Centers on the fate of the family after their arrest and exile to Siberia. A good deal of background, but important specific details of the life in the house are lacking. Still, does provide some insights for historians.

I really like this book. It's well written. What I found delightful was that this book was based from papers of the Imperial children's English tutor. I highly recommend this to any Romanov enthusiast or anyone just interested in the last days of Imperial Russia

This book is a great read for both newbies to the Romanovs as well as buffs. It is lushly illustrated with rare photos, first hand accounts from Gibbes as well as the children's other tutors, and gets into the imprisonment better than most books I have read about the Romanovs. Being the buff that I am (;)

I was not dissapointed, and i don't think you will be either.

Even before buying this book, of course, I was not surprised that it is rather outdated. Not only have some of the speculations been proven false with the many discoveries made since it was published, but I have to say that some of the language is rather atrocious for our modern minds - not only is there some anti-semitism present in the language of this book (due to the views of many of the members of the Imperial Family and their suite at the time), but the old-fashioned views about class are also present in the way it refers to the Imperial Family versus the peasant revolutionaries, etc. This is the only issue I really have with the book.

That being said, I think that this book has value historically (though not much academically, because it is so out of date), and I am happy to have secured my own copy for my personal Romanov library. Some of the photographs in this book are hard to find, even in the internet age; and because it is written from the papers of someone who knew the family very closely, it has value in that respect, as well. Again, I am glad to have added it to my collection.

"The House of Special Purpose" is compiled from the papers of Charles Sydney Gibbes (or Gibbs), English tutor to the children of Tsar Nicholas II. J. C. Trewin did an excellent job of going through Gibbs' papers and combining them with published sources to form a fascinating narrative. The photographs, too, are well-chosen. The Russian revolution happens a third of the way through the book; however, Gibbs was with the family in their captivity in Siberia, and has interesting anecdotes and dimensions to add. One complaint is the lack of a proper bibliography. While "House of Special Purpose" was mostly based on unpublished sources, it would be nice to know at a glance what other sources Trewin consulted. (Sometimes sources are given in footnotes at the bottom of the page; other times they are not.) Similarly, an index might have been nice. However, these are both stylistic complaints. This is an interesting book, highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the last tsar. It is, as other reviewers have said, a shame that it is out of print and hard to find.

I read this book after I read Nicholas and Alexandra. It was a good book and interesting to see the last prision the family lived in before their deaths. The pictures were interesting, especially the sad picture of the Empress's wheel chair in the house after their murder. A must read for any fan of Russian history.

This is a wonderful book that describes the last days of Czar Nicholas II and his family. The emphasis is on the children --- son Alexis and daughters Anastasia, Maria, Tatyana, and Olga.
The book is based on the recollections of the children's tutor, Pierre Gilliard, who accompanied them in exile for a time. It is filled with photographs, letters, and other memorobilia from Monsieur Gilliard's collection. These provide a delightful side to the tragic story of the last days of the Romanovs.
It is a pity that this wonderful book is out of print.
I love history, tragic or not, this biography is interesting and tragic. The Tsar and his family suffered because he made mistakes early in his life and ultimately executed as a result. Good story.
