Why I Stayed: The Choices I Made in My Darkest Hour. by Gayle Haggard and Angela Elwell Hunt. On November 2, 2006, Gayle Haggard’s life changed forever. That was the day that her husband, Ted Haggard, founder of the 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs and the President of the NAE, confessed to her the truth. In Why I Stayed, Gayle walks us through the choices she made in her darkest hours.

Why I Stayed: The Choices. has been added to your Cart. I became weary of her negative reaction to the "overseers" from New Life church. It was as if they were the sinners in the book and Gayle and Ted were the ones sinned against by their judgmental attitudes. The overseers always seemed to act in unchristian and uncaring ways, according to Gayle. It felt petty to me given the circumstances.

Why I Stayed" reminds us of what less-than-perfect people desperately need-a community of family and faith that offers healing love and a path to restoration.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 349-351). Ted Haggard was the senior pastor of the 14,000-member New Life Church and the highly regarded president of the National Association of Evangelicals. More importantly, he was Gayle's loving husband of twenty-eight years, a devoted father to their five children, her closest friend, and a man she knew fully. At least, she thought she knew him fully.

In Why I Stayed, Gayle walks us through the choices she made in her darkest hours. I was intrigued by Oprah's reaction to her as well; she seemed incredulous that anyone could make this choice under the circumstances.

A mountain stood in front of me, a difficult climb, and I didn’t know what lay on the other side. I don't remember why I first bought this book. I've had it for several years but God led me to read it now when I most needed it.

He said that his wife had had a dream that Ted and I were getting married, and then he told Ted, "You'd better not hurt Gayle. Ted was stunned, because at that point we weren't even dating.

While I admire that Gayle Haggard remained with her husband through the ordeal and frequently shared her Christian values and scripture verses to emphasize the restoring grace of God, I stopped reading about halfway through. Anything to do with the overseers or with the pastor who took over for Ted always seemed to be negative. The emphasis seemed to be on what "poor Ted" was suffering instead of the damage that his sinful actions caused to so many. I eventually got tired of it and just scanned through the rest of the book. If I had known ahead of time that Ted and Gayle appeared on the celebrity wife swap TV show I wouldn't have purchased the book to begin with.
I have to say I was surprised that J.I, Packer endorsed this. Not sure that he actually read it all the way through. It seemed suspicious to me that Ted was apparently completely healed so quickly (though I hope he has been delivered) and it seems odd that the Holy Spirit would lead Ted back to Colorado Springs to start another church with the possibility of drawing people from his former church. Overall, it was a disappointing read.

Christians tend to tell pretty stories with perfect endings. This book is messy. Messy and beautiful. It tells the story of REAL faith, real sin and real redemption. If you or someone you love has failed, this book is the light that can give you hope. God isn’t finished with you yet!

I don't remember why I first bought this book. I've had it for several years but God led me to read it now when I most needed it. This is a powerful book of God's forgiveness and grace and a wife's forgiveness and grace. This book is a testimony that no sin, confessed and truly repented, is larger than the love and mercy of God.

I strongly recommend this book.

This gives the background of what happened with Ted and Gayle. It's encouraging how the Lord gives us second chances.

This precious story makes you realize that too often the way we think things should be done when there is moral failure is the exact opposite of what Jesus would do.

I've been very surprised by Gayle's story, so much so that I can say this is at the top of my "must read" list. I think that women should read this book before they are married and soon thereafter, to get a handle on what love really means. Gayle tells a candid and honest story, she discloses how her family was abandoned by so-called Christians and left to wade through the devastation of her husband's sin and betrayal on their own. She comes out of the situation renewed and more devoted as a wife and mother than she was before, and she explains that the experience was transformational because she and Ted are now devoted to a fully inclusive, tolerant and Jesus-like ministry. As a feminist attorney who is also a Christian wife and mother, I enjoyed the depth of her explanations and I felt that she was as honest as she could be under the circumstances. Great book and I highly recommend it.

This is very nice book for personal reflection or group discussion. We ( 7 people) bought this book and discussed the importance at our book club
Thank you Gayle for showing your grace and love in the midst of what others would have seen as their wide open door out of a bad situation.

You have shown others what it means to stay truly committed to their marriage and follow God's example of forgiveness.
