Holidays at Roselands isn't so much a sequel to Elsie Dinsmore as the second half of the same book. You wouldn't notice where one book ended and the other began if it weren’t for the different title page of Holidays at Roselands - the first line of which says something like, Elsie felt better the next morning. Elsie, however, does not feel better for long. Her father gets sick, and Elsie is the perfect nurse - she’s nine by this time, but it probably wouldn’t make a difference if she were half that age - until her father asks her to read a novel to him one Sunday.
ELSIE'S HOLIDAYS AT ROSELANDS is the sequel to ELSIE DINSMORE. Author Martha Finley seems to have poured out her own sexual frustrations into writing, hence the semi-incestuous love affair between "good" Elsie and "bad" Papa. It brings our heroine, sugar-sweet Elsie, into direct conflict with her godless, domineering Papa. Elsie, as introduced in the first volume, is picture-perfect, a little Southern belle living in Virginia in the 1840's. When Elsie and her father are finally reconciled, the scene is described in passionate, even lurid terms. Many kisses, fondlings and "pettings" will ensue. Not much hope left for Mr. Travilla, grown-up family friend who's besotted with Elsie himself. Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works. Elsie at Ion. Dinsmore and Elsie, Rose and Edward Allison-were occupying very comfortable quarters in a large hotel at one of our fashionable watering-places. A bedroom for each, and a private parlor for the joint use of the party, had been secured in advance, and late the night before they had arrived and taken possession. It was now early in the morning, Elsie and her papa were in his room, which was in the second story and opened upon a veranda, shaded by tall trees, and overlooking a large grassy yard at the side of the building. Beyond were green fields, woods, and hills.

The school-room at Roselands was a very pleasant apartment; the ceiling, it is true, was somewhat lower than in the more modern portion of the building, for the wing in which it was situated dated back to the old-fashioned days prior to the Revolution, while the larger part of the mansion had not stood more than twenty or thirty years; but. the effect was relieved by windows reaching from floor to ceiling, and opening on a veranda which overlooked a lovely flower- garden, beyond which were fields and woods and hills.
