It appears to be tongue-in-cheek similar to the Dave Barry book on parenthood. As with anything in life take it with a grain of salt guys. Its a funny take on communication between men and women. If you read it as "funny" and not "oh my gosh I have done that" or "how dare she", you will not feel defensive as you read it. you will just laugh your ass off. Have always thought it is God's little joke to put such two different creatures on this earth. All we can do is try to understand the opposite sex.

I read an excerpt of this book on the web. This book isn't written to be taken literally, but I DO believe that it could be a helpful insight into how men think. My excerpt was about what men really mean when they say something to a woman... or what they really hear when women talk them. Previous reviewers have said that this book isn't accurate, and it isn't when it comes to any one particular man. Many of the items in the excerpt didn't apply to me, but ABSOLUTELY EVERY item in the book applied to either me, or one of my close friends. This book doesn't apply to A MAN, but it applies to MEN. This is guys at their worst, and it's honest about it. Don't expect every item to apply to your guy, but some of them are bound to, and the rest of those items will apply to other men. I think this could be a VERY useful insight into our minds.

So I haven't read the book, BIG DEAL! I just finished reading a rather large excerpt from this book and all I have to say is that this author has never spent a day with a guy in her LIFE!! I mean, SERIOUSLY, what a bunch of crap! It describes men as primates (and primitive ones at that), who have not a decent/caring bone in their bodies and whose only interest in life is to get laid. Sure, there are some pretty rotten apples out there who this applies to, but personally, I don't know a single guy who fits this TOTTALLY stereotypical image of men. I mean HELL! It sounds like she's Jane Goodall or something. Though I'd have to say that this book would substitute for a REALLY good joke book any day of the week! I'll just site a few lines to show you what I am talking about:

"To men, conversation is a means, not an end. They don't even like talking to each other that much -- two guys can watch a game in silence for four hours and walk away feeling they've bonded. When men do use words, it's primarily doublespeak to stay on top."

You can see what I mean. Neways, I'll just leave you with ONE more excerpt:

He says: This is our third date, isn't it?

He says: You think it's true what they say about oysters?

Um, I too read only an iVillage excerpt, and not to stress anyone out, but as a female -- and one who's been around the block a couple of times -- I wonder if perhaps a few of you gentlemen reviewers aren't being just a little defensive...? I get the feeling the book is intended as less a "tome" than a handbook (and a lighthearted one at that), and, sure, the generalizations may rankle a few of you more exemplary fellows, but from my perspective, among many of the otherwise clued-in women I know, when it comes to the underlying subtleties of inter-gender communication, most women are so sadly in the dark they couldn't "read" a man if he was plastered on a billboard. So, lighten up, don't take it so personally, and give gals a chance to get some help reading between the lines (without their reading in too much, that is). That said, the book doesn't strike me as spectacularly on point, but a slightly less didactic "Mars-Venus" take on the matter. I guess we could all, after all, use a little more sense of humor in these matters...?

Just read the 3-page excerpt from iVillage. I have no reason to think that it's not representative of the entire book.

The author is sexist, insulting, demeaning, and obviously lacking the most basic understanding of the male psyche. Examples abound:

1. "The awful truth is, most men have no idea how they feel at any given time."

2. "Men can only take directions one at a time. So, if you want him to go into the kitchen and get you a cup of tea, make it a two-part request"

3. "... investigating why men keep things bottled up found it was to maintain power in a relationship "

4. "Here's what he really doesn't want to hear from you (and probably won't hear anyway)"

5. "What are you thinking about?: His feelings, like his answers, will be simple."

I'll make it easy and provide you with the answer key: False, false, false, false and false.

Can you imagine what would happen if a similar article was published describing women in the same vicious and ridiculous way? It's sad that male bashing of this kind is considered normal in today's society.
