Ernst Mach's Science of mechanics is a classic of physics. It's purpose is to show that mechanics is a science based on assumptions, but in the process, there are shown many, many facts which give the cause for such assumptions. Mach is probablly best remembered for his supporst of logical positivism, and his opposition to the reality of atomic and molecular theory. Well, the major downside of the book is that the most of the formulas are printed terribly (for instance, most of the horizontal bars in formulas like A/B are missing, and they are also missing in most of the square root symbols (so they look more like the letter "V").
