Modern Practice in Stress and Vibration Analysis documents the proceedings of the conference on Modern Practice in Stress and Vibration Analysis organized by the Stress Analysis Group of the Institute of Physics at the University of Liverpool, 3-5 April 1989. The Group has been known in the UK for its contribution in providing meetings with an emphasis on application, covering topics which range widely to include modern numerical techniques and advanced experimentation. Stress analysis is an important part of engineering science, as failure of most engineering components is usually due to stress. The component under a stress investigation can vary from the legs of an integrated circuit to the legs of an offshore drilling rig, or from a submarine pressure hull to the fuselage of a jumbo jet aircraft. The constitutive properties of the materials must be determined using materials and processing condition similar to those of the finished devices. The magnitude of stress in such cases can be quite high if ‘flip-chip’ technology, where the chip is directly attached to the board with solder columns, is used.
