It is a distillation of the stuff you can find in the same author's "Encylopedia of The ers" (Three volumes). I found it a bit repetitive (how many lake monsters do we need?) and only bought the book on recommendation from someone else as an RPG resource. I do not echo the recommendation. This is a Charles Fort style "here's what I hear" document rather than a scholarly attempt to sort out truth from fiction.

2 Monsters Are Nature’s Playthings. I have written half a dozen books now, and I think Churchill has captured the process perfectly. I am happy to fling this monster out to the public

cast from no mold, spinning out of control, and beautiful. 2 Monsters Are Nature’s Playthings. Griffins, Monstrous Bones, Natural History and Credulity, Monstrous Races. 3 Hermaphrodites and Man-headed Oxen. I am happy to fling this monster out to the public. But I’m proud of it, and I’ll probably miss my long servitude to it. Of course no monster gets built alone; even Dr. Frankenstein had Igor’s help (at least in the movies).

Author Daniel Cohen used to pump out books like this fairly regularly in the 1970s. He would take a paranormal or occult subject and write an introductory book on the subject aimed mostly at readers who had only a casual interest in the subject and wanted to learn more. Most of his books were aimed at institutional sales, school libraries being a particular target. Thus it's sometimes not easy finding copies of his books without library fixtures.

Here, he takes on the subject of cryptozoology but restricts himself to the western hemisphere, primarily the US and Canada. He reviews the origins of various creatures in an engaging and friendly manner. He takes a middle of the road approach. He doesn't dismiss out of hand but doesn't accept uncritically either. It is easy to see that he's skeptical of most of the subjects discussed here but one gets the impression he's going out his way to give a fair hearing to all sides. He mostly succeeds.

There is no pretense on the author's part that he has done any original research on the subject; again this is just an overview for those casually interested. For those interested in following up there is a bibliography of more thorough works, both enthusiastic and skeptical.

Recommended for newcomers to the field although it is a little dated with a 1975 copyright date. Fans of Cohen won't be disappointed either.

This is a fun little book that covers several topics: UFOs (including MIBs), Bigfoot, the abominable snowman and more. If you find this kind of stuff interesting, this is an easy and fun read. I first read this in the 5th grade and went out to buy it several years later. I've never regretted the purchase.

For those of you that love cryptozoology-don't buy this book. This book is mainly for those that have a passing interest in this type of subject. The entire book is written from a skeptics point of view as well.Book is fine for kids but if you're into Heuvelmans,Sanderson,Coleman,etc.-prepare to disappoint yourself.

Like the author of the previous post, I remember reading this book in 5th grade. It was in my elemenatary school library. It was a lot of fun and introduced me to a lot of the classics of fringe belief. The Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, etc., and an interesting chapter on the Cardiff Giant. That was back in 1975/76, as we were entering a golden age of popular paranormal belief, with "In Search of..." soon to be on tv, and all those bigfoot documentaries in the theaters.
