Rosen's book was seen as the most complete, but there were many criticisms of the writing style and understandability. I read the first chapter online and decided I could live with style.

If you plan on getting this book for a college course as a cheaper option to the original, DON'T. While the listing and the cover claim that this is the seventh edition, the preface makes a contradiction and states that this is the sixth edition.

In addition, this book has NO in-text exercises. This completely leaves you in the dust if your instructor decides to issue these questions on your homework.

Why they thought listing this version as the same as the hard cover, who knows. They are different textbooks. completely different questions. If you bought this for your course thinking "paperback is cheaper", well you got the wrong book.

My professor was a genius but difficult to follow, I hoped this book he halfheartedly required for the class would help, but I was wrong. Youtube, a white board, and sheer effort will be your best companions when it comes to discrete mathematics.

I think I can best describe this book as assumptious. A lot of the time it seems as if Rosen assumes that parts of a problem are intuitive to you and so he will go into it rather quickly. Also, there is a focus on quantity of problems. Rather than guiding readers on how to figure out many problems, it is as if Rosen drops tons of problems before you, smiles, and says "good luck" before walking away. This may be my fault, but I personally like when author's introduce problems very slowly, in plain English, with visuals/their thought process, and with whatever details they feel will not confuse their reader.

Despite what the cover says, the paperback version of the book is NOT the seventh edition of the book. It is in fact, according to the preface, the sixth edition. The text may be close enough to the seventh edition that you could get away with it if that was your only purpose in buying it, but if your professor assigns exercises from the book by number, then the problem numbers will not match. I found this out the hard way by purchasing the book based on false advertising.

Used it for 2 courses. It was difficult at times because important steps were omitted and large leaps made some sense but required a great deal of outside research to fill in the missing steps.

This was the textbook I used for an undergraduate course in Discrete Mathematics. I found the book confusing and the examples largely unhelpful. I probably would have failed the course if I had not supplemented this textbook with other, better discrete mathematics textbooks, edx lectures, and reading explanations of different mathematical proofs on Mathematics Stack Exchange.

Most of the example problems seemed either ridiculously easy, or overwhelmingly difficult. The author would sometimes work through a few simple steps of a problem, perform some crucial but unexplained intermediate step that you're just supposed to somehow know, and finish by giving the answer. Luckily, I could find better examples online that taught the concepts of each chapter better than the author.

There's a lot of biographies of famous mathematicians scattered throughout each chapter. They're somewhat interesting, but I do wish the author put more effort into explaining the concepts of each chapter better and less time writing about the history of mathematics.

Purchasing this textbook for a Computer Science related discrete mathematics course, I tend to buy the paperback versions of the book, used, because it's usually pretty cheap to do so, or at least more so than hardcover. Imagine my surprise when I find some strangeness between the homework assigned from the book and the actual problems in the book, to find out that the book I'd bought had an entirely different ISBN. The only thing I clicked on that changed anything was the paperback version. The Kindle, hardcover, and loose leaf versions are all the same ISBN, but the paperback version is a different ISBN, be careful!
