Diffuse pollution from human activities at the land surface remains a major groundwater quality concern for the UK, for our European partners, in North America and now increasingly in the developing world. The impact on the underlying groundwater of leached nitrogen from the gradual intensification of arable farming was recognized in the 1970s. An area covering assessment of the groundwater residence times for the upper pore aquifers in the River Elbe Basin was performed. Residence times were determined by combining groundwater velocities and flow distances along each flow-path to the surface waters using a two-dimensional model approach.

Aquifer parameters of the groundwater system in the Nubian sandstone aquifer were determined and its hydraulic principles clarified. A quantitative assessment of the groundwater flow was accomplished. Model simulations done for a part of the study area resulted in the determination of the extractable quantities in a well field and the expected drawdown.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) in partnership with The Environment Agency (EA) have today, for the first time, published a series of maps which show the depth to each shale gas and oil source rock below principal groundwater aquifers in England and Wales. Understanding the distance between the two is important when assessing the environmental risks of shale gas and oil exploitation. source rocks in England and Wales.

Groundwater pollution caused by human activities usually falls into one of two categories: point-source pollution and nonpoint-source pollution. Fertilizers and pesticides applied to crops eventually may reach underlying aquifers, particularly if the aquifer is shallow and not "protected" by an overlying layer of lowpermeability material, such as clay. Depending on the complexity of the aquifer and the types of contamination, some groundwater cannot be restored to a safe drinking quality. Under these circumstances, the only way to regain use of the aquifer is to treat the water at its point of use.
