The rain coast of British Columbia is one of the few wild pearls left in our natural world-where wolves and white bears stalk the foggy forests as they have for millennia. Ian McAllister has had the great fortune to witness an ecosystem of incredible mystery. I am grateful to him for his efforts to help preserve this unique landscape and read with great engagement of his experiences among a nation of wolves like no others. ―Rick Bass, author of The New Wolves: The Return of the Mexican Wolf to the American Southwest and Caribou Rising: Defending the Porcupine Herd, Gwich-'in Culture, and the.

The Last Wild Wolves describes his experiences over that period following two packs of wolves, one in the extreme outer coastal islands and another farther inland in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. The behavior of these animals - which depend on the vast old-growth forest and its gifts - is documented in words and pictures as they fish for salmon in the fall, target seals hauled out on rocks in winter, and give birth to their young in the base of thousand-year-old cedar trees in spring. "As if appearing in a dream, a stream of wolves emerged from the forest edge." So begins this exhilarating journey to one of the planet's most spectacular regions―Canada's North Pacific coast, our largest intact temperate Rain Forest and one of the last places where wolves live wild and undisturbed. Award-winning writer and wildlife photographer Ian McAllister draws from his intimate observations of more than forty wolf packs along this rugged coastline over a seventeen-year period in this first-ever documentation of their fascinating, complex way of life. In a compelling narrative and more than 100 stunning photographs, McAllister captures these majestic animals fishing for salmon, stalking seals hauled out on rocks, playing on the beach, and raising their families. The Last Wild Wolves also describes the work of scientists whose recent findings have corroborated McAllister's own observations and the traditional knowledge gleaned by First Nations people over centuries―that these wolves are genetically distinct; unlike other wolves, they subsist on coastal prey and swim from island to island in their archipelago home. The Last Wild Wolves is a remarkable portrait of the unique lives of island wolves and an eloquent expression of just how much is at stake in their preservation. Copub: Greystone Books

Ian McAllister invested decades into researching, observing, photographing, and most of all UNDETRSTANDING the wolves of Costal British Columbia, of Vancouver Island and the Great Bear Forest in Central British Columbia. He convinces us that this is maybe the last population of wolves world wide that has escaped the deforming pressures of being hunted to the verge of extinction - with the dire consequences to the remaining genome of the population. His subjects - the Last Wild Wolves - he pursues in the company of researchers including academics as well as native experts, and he weaves their combined experiences and insights into a fascinating story of diversified characters in a social environment - a story backed up by superb and rare photography.

This book is a joy for all nature lovers. And one can only wish that many trophy hunters be touched by it.

Beautifully written and incredible photos...heartbreaking what man has done to the world of animals

This book is striking visually, but its greatest impact is in the story it tells of the wolves in the region. It is a remarkable journey that captures a connection to the wolves. However, I must issue a warning: You may think less of your own species for the lack of respect many of us exhibit toward the wolves. I would love to see this book as part of high school education to help raise awareness. It is a uplifting book that gives one hope.

A real treasure for anyone loving the endangered species of our planet.
Jediathain

Biologists are being ignored , and wolves are being slaughtered in the USA when they are barely off the endangered species list. This biologist's experiences should be shared with anyone who has a heart and will listen. This is a beautiful book . The photographs and the shared lives of these beautiful animals will amaze and touch you.
