If Folio books are supposed to represent a level of canonical status, it seems odd to have this slim volume represent science fiction in general. One would have thought that at this point we could afford do be a little more specific. Still, it’s an entertaining collection as far as it goes

If Folio books are supposed to represent a level of canonical status, it seems odd to have this slim volume represent science fiction in general. Still, it’s an entertaining collection as far as it goes. Things are arranged chronologically: it begins with Voltaire’s 'Micromegas', a terrifically entertaining philosophical sketch about giant visitors from another world who visit earth and are confounded by the erudition of denizens who are to them smaller than the tiniest insects.

Depuis vingt ans, Dorian et Solyane règnent avec clairvoyance sur Gwondaleya. Sous leur impulsion, la cité connaît une ère de paix et de prospérité. Pourtant, une menace pèse sur leur petit royaume. Des hordes de fanatiques, les Fayads, surgissent de nulle part et détruisent de petites villes frontalières. Simultanément, des prêcheurs exaltés prédisent la venue d’un mystérieux prophète. Étrangement, comme pour confirmer le danger, les hivers se font plus longs et plus rigoureux, diminuant les récoltes et décimant impitoyablement le gibier. Appelé vers une destination mystérieuse, Dorian disparaît. Gagnée par l’angoisse, Solyane ne parvient plus à discerner l’avenir. Elle sait seulement que son fils Palléas, parti escorter une caravane, doit le premier affronter le mystérieux prophète. Mais qui se cache derrière le masque énigmatique que le monstre ne quitte jamais ? Et quel rôle mystérieux jouent les Lonniens, ces ancêtres lointains revenus des étoiles ? Une puissance terrifiante, venue du fond des âges, se dresse devant Solyane. Peu à peu, un piège machiavélique se referme sur elle, menaçant de détruire jusqu’au couple mythique qu’elle forme avec Dorian. Trouvera-t-elle le courage d’aller jusqu’au bout de sa quête, seule capable de lui donner la puissance nécessaire pour combattre l’entité démoniaque ? Une quête fabuleuse, que les légendes d’autrefois appelaient le Graal, et dans laquelle elle devra affronter et dépasser la mort elle-même. Graal, récit d’aventures épiques fertile en rebondissements, est aussi un roman symbolique, où s’opposent deux visions spirituelles irrémédiablement destinées à se combattre, l’humanisme et le fanatisme aveugle.
