I think modern sci-fi lags behind classic science fiction in quality-speculative fiction from the Golden Age is the best. Here's my list of the 10 best science fiction short stories ever.

As a story grows shorter and shorter, all the fancy embroidery that length makes possible must go. In the short story, there can be no subplots; there is no time for philosophy; what description and character delineation there is must be accomplished with concision. If you like having a book of short stories by your bedside while and as you read the ponderous tome you are currently plowing through, and you like Fiction and Fantasy, because you can't call some of this Science Fiction, then you will certainly like this book.

Question: Who was the greatest science fiction writer - Robert Heinlein . But he did write some really interesting stories.

Question: Who was the greatest science fiction writer - Robert Heinlein, Arthur Clarke, or Isaac Asimov? Answer: I don’t think there’s a valid answer to this question. This is largely a question of opinion. Michael Crichton doesn’t write Sci-fi as such, but his books like Jurrassic Park, Next, Swarm etc. are always about the cutting edge of technology.

Science Fiction or Fantasy Short Stories. These short stories feature advanced sci-fi technology and other fantastical things not possible in our world. At a party at a country house, a guest announces that he can teach animals to speak. As proof, he produces the host’s cat, Tobermory, who proceeds to embarrass the guests by revealing details of private conversations. All Summer in a Day Ray Bradbury.

Science Fiction: Robert Beckford and guests explore the role of religion in science fiction. Similar to Shelley, Irving failed to give us one science fiction short story after penning a groundbreaking novel in the genre. There are some who claim Rip Van Winkle is a sci-fi tale, but where is the science? As mentioned, at the end of this anthology is a list of the short science fiction stories considered. Note that fantasy stories where magic happens with no scientific explanation have been excluded. This explains why such tales as Honoré de Balzac’s The Exlir of Life and Mary Shelley’s The Mortal Immortal and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment were left off the list.

A horrifying concept. Rather than risk your life (and risk being bored) travelling to the stars, humanity instead opts to create genetic amalgamations of themselves and load all their memories and consciousnesses into the bodies. Of course, not everyone is up for that, and our narrator resists being little more than a cargo carrier inside a ship.

This will make you reconsider your desire to reach the stars. Not only the idea of the travails you may face yourself, but also the things you may have to do to others in order to achieve your goals.

While this was an interesting premise, I must say that I wasn't too invested in the story. Perhaps it was the early morning, but it felt like a little too much info was being thrown at me.
