Sacred Ground Mercedes Lackey Jennifer Talldeer, is a private investigator. To those who were here first. She is also Kestral-Hunts-Alone, an apprentice shaman learning modified tribal magic from her grandfather. The smoke of cedar and sweetgrass joined the steam, the humidity making both scents so vivid she tasted them in the back of her throat.

Lackey's a great storyteller. where this book excels is in its heroine. Lacker makes you want to know her-a significant characteristic in the success of female PIs like Kinsey Milhorne, . Warshawski, and Kat Colorado.

Mass Market Paperbound. Lackey's a great storyteller. A very enjoyable thriller on several levels.

Mercedes needs to write more along this line of Native American stories that are set in a modern world, with the same PI., I absolutely loved this book. It is hard to find NA fiction books that are good and actually show the NA as they are today and how and why they feel as they do about ancestors, burial grounds, and their culture.. This one is great. It is obvious she researched her NA information well, and the story keeps you on your toes. The violence and sexual content are very low key;

Our main character is a NA Female PI who also specialized in finding NA artifact and returning them to the proper person or tribe; she has her grandfather living with her, teaching her all the NA shaman medicine he can since she is a Medicine Woman in training and he's also driving her nuts..

A supposed shopping mall being built on a supposed NA burial site finds NA artifacts; the explosion of a bulldozer with several injured and killed;; a female PI that is NA called in to investigate by the insurance company; an X Boyfriend jumping into the middle of things and he's got "ATTITUDE" big time, which she doesn't need.. A scheme to cheat the insurance company; the theft of items from another NA burial ground to salt the mall area and help the scheme along; the items causing Bad NA Medicine; some of said items kept by the wrong person which causes even more problems; a lot of information on NA Medicine; plenty of danger and twists but not the nightmare stuff you find in other books; A lot of information on how the NA feel and think about things, a wonderful mixture of the old meeting the new, a really refreshing good read.. I read it in two sittings and am reading it again.. I wish I could find more books written like this one.

I came across the character of Jennifer Talldear in a short story in the collection "Trio of Sorcery" and looked for any other appearances. Like Diana Tregarde before her, Jenny is a talented, powerful woman who works hard to hone her skills, both as a shaman and a private investigator. She makes her own way in the world staying true to her beliefs despite the sexism surrounding her. Well-plotted, unflashy mystery, believably resolved in the context of the belief system presented. Interesting character, too bad one novel & one short story are all we see of her.

I waited almost 6 months before reading this book, savoring the anticipation of an excellent story. Often I'm disappointed - the story isn't as much fun as anticipating it was. That is NOT the case with Sacred Ground. I enjoyed it so much, I ended up reading it twice in the same weekend! If Lackey takes votes, I cast 10,000 votes for another Jennifer Talldeer story (or stories from the other main characters' perspectives - they're all people I would like to be friends with).

Jennifer Talldeer is several people. We know her as a woman making her way as a private detective, a tough business for a man, let alone a woman. Her tribesfolk know her as Good Eagle Woman, an active participant in the powwows and a determined rescuer of Native American artifacts. Her true name is Kestrel Hunts Alone, student of her shaman grandfather Mooncrow, on of the respected Little Old Men of the Osage.
When Jennifer is called in to investigate sabotage at a construction site that appears to have disturbed some Indian remains, her instincts as Kestrel warn her that all is not as it seems. There is evidence that the artifacts uncovered at the Riverside Mall come from a far more important site. Not only are the often-malignant 'Little People' badly stirred up, but something far more evil than grave robbing is also at work. Somehow, Rod Calligan, the builder, is at the center of the trouble. He is intent on blaming the Native Americans working for him for the troubles at the mall.
Things are not made easier when David Spotted Horse, Jennifer's first lover, reappears as an Indian activist. At first, the antagonism festers between David and Jennifer, who does not agree with some of David's more militant positions. Then, as David comes to understand and accept Kestrel's spiritual role, her affection for him becomes a distraction, albeit a welcome one.
In a sense, Jennifer's real adversary is not Calligan, the Little People, the Evil One, or even her occasionally irritating grandfather. It is her own need to be perfect and to control outcomes that she must overcome in order to win her final confrontations. This is a tough challenge, one that she must face herself in her quest for a shaman's medicine-pipe.
Mercedes Lackey alternates between youth oriented fiction series and less frequent, more serious writing. While Jennifer Talldeer is reminiscent of Diana Tregarde, the occult detective, there is little similarity of style between the Tregarde series and 'Sacred Ground.' Both are strong heroines, but Diana is presented as a finished person, while Jennifer is still learning and growing. The light banter that Diana often indulges in is rare for Kestrel. 'Sacred Ground' reveals a maturity of writing that complements its plot. This is a weightier tale, but one that is much more rewarding.
Risky Strong Dromedary
Starting a new series on another, different base. This one deals with Native American history and beliefs. Character development took back seat to the lessons about medicine (magical abilities) and prejudices that still exist concerning Native Americans at the beginning but came along. Looking forward to the next book.

Good and evil in the Native American spirit world. P.I. Jennie, an unorthodox "warrior" on the shamans path, brings her talents and personality to solve problems in the world of the heavy eyebrows. The Native American theme comes accross very well. The heroine is a good character and her relationship with her grandfather is done very well. However, as much as I enjoyed this story, I still felt as though I was being cheated. A feeling of flatness pervaded most of the book. Despite this, just enough of interesting character, situation and set, kept me in the book till the end. I would really rate this a bit higher but not quite a four. VERY LIGHT READING.
