The Damask Rose takes readers to the mystical, magical Isle of Skye, in Scotland of 1430, where two clans, MacKay and MacDougald, have been engaged in a blood feud for years. As the story opens, it seems as though the MacDougalds have been defeated and young Tynan MacDougald, only eight years old, has been taken as a slave. But instead of delivering her to safety, he will kill her and get his revenge. What he doesn't count on is falling in love with her, and becoming torn between his newfound love and his blood oath to avenge his clan. FROM THE BACK COVER:
Slave-turned-warrior Laird Tynan MacDougald is sworn to vengeance on behalf of his murdered family. To fulfill that oath, he must execute the heir of the MacKay family, sworn clan enemies of the MacDougalds. That heir is convent-bred Nara MacKay, who is his wife, and with whom he has fallen in love.

MY REVIEW:
"Damask Rose" was a very good and emotionally engaging romance. The first 40 or so pages started out a little slow, but that's before the hero and heroine meet so there wasn't much actual dialogue. After they do meet however the story picks up its pace and held my interest until the very last chapter.

I absolutely loved Nara who was so funny! She was totally outspoken, but not annoyingly so. Having lived her entire life in a convent only made her as honest and true of heart as any character I've ever read about. She knows nothing about sex, and the parts when she talks about her husbands "man-thing" were too cute. She throws Tynan through a loop so many times with her outrageous tongue that I couldn't help laughing out loud and loving her the more for it. Tynan was a bit tougher to relate to. While I understood what he'd been through and felt for him, I still didn't like the fact that he was willing to take out the sins of a grandfather on an innocent. Especially someone as good and kind as Nara. He keeps his promise of vengeance (or honor as he refers to it) for much too long, which I ultimately didn't like and is the reason I gave it four stars instead of five.

In addition, there's a side character named Tim who is afflicted with palsy, and was a wonderful and important addition to this well-rounded story. Overall it was beautifully written, different, and well worth the time I spent reading it. Any lover of Scotland or medieval romances are sure to enjoy it =)

My daughter had the pleasure of meeting the author, Haywood Smith, recently at a book signing. She called to asny of her books and I said no and got to speak with Haywood on the phone. After talking with her, I ordered 5 romance from Amazon and my daughter purchased 2 of her humous books for me that day. The Red Hat Ladies is great and I have passed it on to my sister-in-law who was visiting and picked it up to read while she was here.

Tears streamed down my face as I finished Haywood Smith's historical romance, DAMASK ROSE. Filled with intrigue and honor, corruption and goodness, at its core it is the story of a struggle between darkness and light. Tynan MacDougald has vowed to kill Nara, the granddaughter of the laird who murdered his family and enslaved him. The love that grows between the two of them chips at the wall of hatred around his heart, but a vow made is a vow that must be kept for the sake of his honor and that of his family. The tension between them builds throughout the story to an amazing climax. Of special interest is the palsied character, Timothy. Nara loves and cares for him on their long journey from her island home to her grandfather's presence, despite Tynan's protests. Ms. Smith's extensive research brings Medieval Scotland to life with all its grandeur and squalor. Her knowledge of human nature makes this an exceptional novel.

This book has not been given the praise it deserves. This is an EXCELLENT historical fiction in the style of Julie Garwood (high praise, indeed, as Julie is my TOP favourite romance writer.) Nara is a wonderful, innocent, warm-hearted heroine who is always looking to find the good in people and the situation. Tynan is a magnificent man who is tortured by a horrific childhood and now by his vow of revenge. Secondary characters like Tim are skilfully interwoven to create a deep, rich, satisfying story. Run right out and read this - you'll LOVE it!

I just finished Haywood Smith's latest, Damask Rose, and it is simply superb. The writing is historically correct, and the characters will touch you with intense empathy for their plight. I love her writing; I think she will continue to give us wonderful books. I'm looking forward to the next Haywood Smith book!
