THE GIFT OF THE THORN At the age of thirty-six Rita pledged to follow the ancient Rule of Saint Augustine. For the next forty years she gave herself wholeheartedly to prayer and works of charity, striving especially to preserve peace and harmony among the citizens of Cascia. With a pure love she wanted more and more to be intimately joined to the redemptive suffering of Jesus, and this desire of hers was satisfied in an extraordinary way.

Saint Rita of Cascia. She is also known as the Saint of the Impossible for the many challenges she faced in life and the many graces she has obtained since death. This attractiveness is due in part to Saint Rita's experience of many challenges in life, met always with great confidence in God and exemplary courage.

Saint Rita of Cascia (Born Margherita Lotti 1381 – 22 May 1457) was an Italian widow and Augustinian nun venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Rita was a child bride, married before the age of 12. The marriage lasted for eighteen years,. The marriage lasted for eighteen years, during which she is remembered for her Christian values as a model wife and mother who made efforts to convert her husband from his abusive behaviour. Upon the murder of her husband by another feuding family, she sought to dissuade her sons from revenge.

Saint Rita of Cascia is often called the saint of the impossible. We celebrate her Feast Day on May 22. As was her goal many years before, she joined the Augustinian Convent in Cascia (after being refused three times). She was blessed with the Stigmata of Our Lord on her forehead. Rita’s story is one of the power of prayer and of faith. Although this stigmata gave off a highly offensive odor she bore it with humility and upon her death in 1457 the fragrance of flowers emanated from her body.
