The prophetic books are divided into categories of major and minor . As "seers," prophets also brought a message of hope and future blessing for those who walked in obedience.
The prophetic books are divided into categories of major and minor prophets. These labels do not refer to the importance of the prophets, but rather, to the length of the books authored by them. The books of the major prophets are long, while the books of the minor prophets are relatively short. The prophetic books were written from the days of Elijah (874-853 BCE) until the time of Malachi (400 BCE). The Old Testament prophets pointed the way to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and showed humans their need for his salvation.

The Minor Prophets of the Bible are shorter books with more specific content . The Minor Prophets are also sometimes called The Twelve. In fact, these books give us some of the richest glimpses and foreshadowing of Christ that we see in the entire Old Testament.
The Minor Prophets of the Bible are shorter books with more specific content, compared to the broader subjects of the Major Prophets. These men were just as significant as the Major Prophets despite the title of minor. If you’re looking for a better understanding of the Messiah and the events that led to and foretold his coming, the Major and Minor prophets are must-reads.
The Minor Prophets are also sometimes called The Twelve . The Major Prophets are described as major because their books are longer and the content has broad, even global implications. The Minor Prophets are described as minor because their books are shorter (although Hosea and Zechariah are almost as long as Daniel) and the content is more narrowly focused. That does not mean the Minor Prophets are any less inspired than the Major Prophets. Both the Major and Minor Prophets are usually among the least popular books of the Bible for Christians to read.

The prophetic books, and the Minor Prophets in particular, offer the interpreter of Scripture unique challenges, but also tremendous blessings. If you have never applied yourself to a study of the minor prophets (as I suspect many have not) and you have a desire to do so, but don’t know where to begin, this is definitely a volume, if not THE volume, with which to begin. Although it’s been written by two scholars, it is designed for pastors, teachers and even personal study. The book has two major sections although they are not designated as such in the Table of Contents.

The Minor Prophets generally have been considered more obscure and difficult to interpret than the other prophetic books of the Old Testament. The very brevity of these books results in the omission of historical allusions and details of description which would assist greatly in interpretation.

There are twelve Minor Prophets, each of whom is given a separate book in Protestant and Catholic Bibles. The most famous of the Minor Prophets, Jonah was famously swallowed by a whale while attempting to flee God’s call. Jonah’s prophetic message is directed not at Israel, but at the sin-choked foreign city of Ninevah-a reminder that God’s love and forgiveness was not limited to one nation or ethnic group.
