Lots of good tips and best practices for beginners. It's a model of good C programming using modern design techniques (including Liskov's data abstraction), showing how to organize a big C project as a bunch of useful libraries. The C Puzzle Book - Alan R. Feuer (1998). The index is very good and serves as a decent reference (just not fully comprehensive, and very shallow). Head First C - David Griffiths and Dawn Griffiths (2012). The Standard C Library - .

Authors of any coding system know that language specifications are useful for syntax issues, but don't help with how-tos and best practices. Tony Self's wonderful DITA Style Guide bridges that gap with insight and clarity, explaining not just how to use virtually every DITA construct (including 1.2), but why you might use one over another, as well as when (and when not!) to use them.

I don't agree with the author's introductory assertion that it's not a "good read" -- I find it thoroughly engrossing, and tend to read it like a hyperlinked web site, jumping about from subject to subject, learning something new at every stop. In fact, I use this book so much that I soon bought a second copy and had it spiral bound ($5 at Kinko's) so it would lay flat on my desk, further increasing its value and usefulness.

This book is filled with clear, accurate, well-described examples, and is written in Tony's easygoing style, turning otherwise dry reference material into accessible and useful guidelines for writing better DITA code.

If you work in DITA at any level, you can't afford not to have this book!

The DITA Style Guide is not an introduction to DITA. Nor is it advanced or esoteric. It is a very accessible reference for anyone seeking practical guidance in choosing between the many options available within the DITA specification.

As a writer in a technical publications department that has recently transitioned to DITA, I am keenly aware of the void filled by this book. After you learn what is technically possible with DITA, you are left wondering about DITA's many options and how to use them strategically.

The DITA Style Guide supplies answers to many complex questions of judgment and explains the reasoning behind its answers. The scope is broad, including most aspects of DITA 1.1 and DITA 1.2. Most content addresses basic and fundamental issues, but advanced topics are also included. All content is treated with rigor.

In the introduction, Tony Self says that the book is meant to be a reference and is not a "good read", but I read it cover-to-cover, pulled along by valuable insights and clear, succinct, confident, and compelling technical writing.

This book is the Chicago Manual of Style for DITA Users!

This book will save Elekta so much time and money because we are starting our DITA pilot soon and I am using this book to rewrite and update our style and writing guide.

Thanks for producing this fabulous resource Tony!

The author fails to define what "DITA" stands for. The author assumes that the entire world audience knows what "DITA" represents. This ill-assumption will have a severe negative impact on sales. Does "DITA" stand for "digital information technology automation,"? How can I purchase a book that does not have a specific title!? Tell the author that he/she should learn how to communicate before they try to sell their communicative works!
