Why would a writer who's been a full-time pro since 1992, has sold more than 30 novels to top New York publishers, and who has well over a million books in print in the US and in multiple translations around the world offer a writing course for 99¢?

It has to be a gimmick, right?

Of course it's a gimmick. But it's a cool one.

My name is Holly Lisle, and I've been making a living as a novelist for a long time. I've won and been nominated for awards, my readers have kept a roof over my family's head for a whole lot of years now (thanks, folks)---and if you click the link on my name above, you'll see that in general, readers are enthusiastic about my work.

HOWEVER...

Knowing how to write does not mean a writer can TEACH people how to write. Lots of writers can't teach. They have no clue how they do what they do.

So the only way I can prove that I can teach you to write is to DO IT.

So here's my 99¢ gimmick.

I'll teach you how to write one tiny but very difficult part of your story or novel.

Your Plot Outline.

This is the reef upon which about half of all NaNoWriMo novels a year die, upon which a billion 30-page novel starts have crashed when reaching page 31...

...and lack of a workable plot structure is the most common reason so many novelists wander lost in the middle of their novels for a year. Or twenty.

I'm betting that I can make outlining your story easy for you, that I can make it fun---and that you will be so thrilled with your success you'll buy some of my other courses (which are even better):

CREATE A CHARATER Clinic--2nd Edition (coming Aug. 15, 2012

CREATE A PLOT Clinic

CREATE A CULTURE Clinic

CREATE A LANGUAGE Clinic

How to Write Page-Turning Scenes

And my BIG courses---
How to Think Sideways: Career Survival School for Writers,
and (coming soon)
How to Revise Your Novel: Get the Book You WANT from the Wreck You WROTE.

Because I can do. And I can teach. And in this course, I'll prove that by teaching you a skill you'll be able to use for the rest of your writing career. For 99¢.

Cheerfully,

Holly Lisle

I've been stuck on a story: characters and setting and no real plot. This mini-course crossed my path, so I checked out the reviews and picked it up last night. Ridiculously helpful. I'm not saying that this outline *gave me* a plot, but it helped me focus my own thoughts in order to find the plot that existed in the mess of notes, snippets of dialogue, and character backgrounds. It's concise, written clearly (free of "artsy" lets explore the subconscious stuff), and actually kind of entertaining (for late night, tucked in bed sort of reading).

Now, I was worried about some of the 1 and 2 star reviews. And I will say that the facts behind those aren't unwarranted. There are a lot of subtle and not so subtle pushes to look at this author's other works. And she does say that's part of the reason this mini-course exists: as an audition. To prove to me that her process has value. But - I was able to just blip right over any of those references and the material was completely worth it. I didn't use a single worksheet and didn't have to. Right above any note that says [Do the blah blah worksheet], there's a set of directions for what to do! I don't know if the worksheet has any *more* details, but the basic exercise is right there. For example: "Select and list the points you want to pursue..." I don't need a worksheet to do that - my notepad works just fine.

So - a great resource that was probably the best 99 cents I've ever spent. Maybe later I'll take a look through Amazon at her other courses, but right now I'm gonna get back to writing my story.

This book was an easy read. I took copious notes so that when I get ready to outline November's NaNoWriMo I will be able to follow through. Though a lot of it feels like other books I have read on the subject, Holly Lisle's personality shows through.

Ms. Lisle left plenty of examples off the top of her head. Because instruction given in other books don't have examples, I find when I try what they present, it turns out to be quite a mess. Needless to say, I will not delete the book. I want it to be easy to refer back to in the next couple months.

I worked through this course in about a week, maybe less, which is pretty quick, considering what the rest of my life is like. Lisle put me through some stuff I never would have thought of, and didn't particularly want to do, but it worked out great! I got a complete suspense plot and some good emotional work for the main characters. I have a lot of books on writing, but this little dilly was so practical that it was both fun and useful. Highly recommend this little course. (And keep it on your computer, because you can use it again and again without repeating yourself.)

I bought this book to get a quick overview of plotting, not as a full course in plot creation - and it fit the bill beautifully. If you've ever read any of my other reviews, you'll know that I'm part-way up the learning curve in morphing from a non-fiction to a fiction author. That means I'm trying to ingest it all as quickly as I can - and having a book like this really helps. Don't expect a lengthy treatise on plotting - that's not what this was intended for. However, if you want to start dipping your big toe into the fiction waters, this is perfect.

I would much rather learn from this easy read than sit through a college writing class. That said, it did seem to take-away from the experience the great number of links and redirects to outside pages (that don't work well on an old original KindleDX) Overall extremely useful information that I will be putting into action with my own ebook ideas. And of course it's only 99cents, come on people ;)

I'd just released my second book - which was doing pretty well - when the publisher hit me with, where are you with the sequel? What sequel? The one to follow this book. While you're at it, Trilogies are popular right now.
What the . ..#$%. I was in a state of panic wondering how I could drag a sequel to what was intended to be a stand alone book out of my head when I saw this book. I've bought a couple of books on plotting and never found them practical enough. This didn't start with a rant or ramble about the suffering of the author as she acquired her knowledge. Went straight with instruction and advice. Then, what do you know, suddenly I found the book I had to write, that hadn't existed as a day dream before, growing as a workable plot outline. I fully expect to be able to send in a good book with less panic than previously.

Very easy to get started and with a natural planning process that didn't confuse me. The worksheets were helpful and I loved the slight touches of humor. Writing should be fun and simple. Holly did a great job showing that.
Holly Lisle really knows what she is talking about. She gives clear guidelines in what she says, and smart ideas to follow. Examples are what I believe, readers of How to write books need, and you'll get them in Holly's books. She uses her own work and plot ideas to give the reader motivation and proof of what she does works. Simply written and to the point.
