How to Grow a Novel is not just a book, but an invaluable workshop in print. Stein takes the reader backstage in the development of memorable characters and fascinating plots.

How to Grow a Novel is not just a book, but an invaluable workshop in print. The chapter on dialogue overflows with solutions for short-story writers, novelists, screenwriters, and playwrights. Stein shows what readers are looking for- and what they avoid- in the experience of reading fiction.

In How to Grow a Novel, Stein coaches fiction writers in providing exactly those things for readers. The final section of the book is devoted to the responsibilities of the publisher. Any but the most stalwart writer can't help but be disheartened by the book business. First off, says Stein, you must write what you read; don't try to pull off a romance novel if you are a student of serious literature, or a literary masterpiece if you thrive on thrillers. It has often been said that a publisher determines a book's fate-barring a miracle-long before it is even released, by the funds allocated to publicize it.

HOW TO GROW A NOVEL is a continuation of Stein's no nonsense approach to tips for writers who desire to be published novelists. The opening words remind writers that a good book must have a magical quality that turns words into a memorable experience for the reader. Stein next explains the necessary ingredients for memorable scenes and unforgettable characters in a novel. Scenes that do not move action in a story are those that should.

How sharp do we want to make the parallels with the world we actually live in? ) But let’s say that your book is set somewhere perfectly ordinary, like London. Writing a novel involves far, far more than just a good start. There are a lot of skills involved, including some that won’t seem at all obvious when you’re just starting out. And by far the most common reason why keen writers abandon half-started novels is simply that they lack the technical skills to overcome ordinary obstacles on the way to the finish line. And you don’t have to be one of those writers. We run courses designed to give you the skills, confidence and guidance to do all this right.

A successful editor, novelist, and award-winning teacher of writers offers a workshop in book form.

I admire anyone who has broken through the wall of rejection and made it as an author--a legitimately published author, that is--and Sol Stein is one of those people. He began as a playwright and went on to write best-selling novels and then to act as editor for those who became best-selling authors; he has done it all. He comes across as an authority on the subject of writing and I listened intently. For those who may be put off by this (I've seen your reviews) you could miss many helpful tips.

He begins with the purpose of the protagonist and conflict in a novel. He also defines the rhythm of dialogue and offers how to maintain point of view. He provided two examples of novels that he edited and offered what they did well and what they did poorly, which I found helpful. He also gave examples of good writing, I'm reading one of those novels now, and how to format a manuscript before sending it to an agent or editor, and this is just a sampling.

I gave him only four stars because he mentions his own publications often, and why not? Instead of telling the reader exactly what he means by a certain statement, he refers the reader to his other publication, Stein on Writing. He gives the reader plenty in How to Grow a Novel, but then he leaves some loose ends too. I would recommend this book to any aspiring novelist. It's not too technical (a.k.a boring) and is a good reference piece.

Good information, and well worth the money. Mr. Stein's examples used to illustrate his points are somewhat wordy, and too many. One or two would suffice. I skipped over most of these. Also, Mr. Stein writes this book from the perspective of 20th century literature, so some of his strongly held opinions aren't necessarily applicable to writing in 2015 and beyond.

I loved this book. I used it to help me write my first novel. This authour is obviously very experienced and also passionate about writing. As well as helping with the nuts and bolts of story and character development, it also inspired me to keep on writing and to be ruthless in editing. I bought this when I was halfway through writing my novel and I wish I had gotten hold of it earlier, because if I had I would have approached my book differently and not encountered some of the difficulties that I did. Some of the advice re submitting the book and publishing is a little outdated, for example there is no reference to epublishing, but this does not detract from its usefulness. Sol Stein peppers his writing and publishng advice with anectdotes and excerpts from best sellers, in a easy, entertaining style. Reading this book was like having a long interesting evening with someone who really knows what they're talking about.

This is one book a writer needs in his/her library. Containing a wealth of valuable information, you'll learn to write better and to appreciate what editors do to help take a book from so-so to a bestseller. Stein's a "been there, done that" writer.editor. You won't regret getting this book. My favorite quote from the book: "A writer is someone who cannot NOT write."

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about the craft of writing. Christie Craig recommended this book to a group of writers in New York this past July. It is well worth the cost. For aspiring authors, this is a must for your library.

Stein writes with the authority gained from a lifetime juggling the roles of writer, editor, and publisher. He provides plain-spoken advice supported by examples and anecdotes. He asserts that the author's number one obligation is to create strong emotion on the part of the reader, and his book builds upon that premise.

Sol Stein is an editor's editor. His pointers are excellent and can help rookie authors avoid making common mistakes. For that matter, he can help seasoned authors as well. If you're thinking about writing, instead of reinventing the wheel, learn from an excellent teacher who has already got things rolling.
This is the second book he has on writing. I personally believe there are not better books on the subject available. If you want to write, and sell what you write this book is a must.
