I believe the course's approach/strategy for gaining conversational proficiency in modern Hebrew is sound. The book's presentation of grammar is quite accessible and it presents enough about the grammar and phonics of Hebrew without delving into minutiae. American English speakers should note that this course uses British English, which does not present much of a problem, but one should be aware in advance.

Unfortunately there are a few problems with the course as published which a good revision would correct. If you have studied Hebrew seriously in other forms, such as biblical Hebrew, these obstacles will be mitigated. But the problems are still annoying and will pose a much greater challenge if this is your first time learning Hebrew:

1) The Hebrew text and transliterations frequently contain typographical errors - some are obvious, others are more subtle and will mislead you until you realize you have learned a word wrongly.
2) Vocabulary is used in exercises before it is introduced in the vocabulary lists - there is not a consistent presentation or rhythm for introducing new vocabulary.
3) The audio tracks are not easily referenced against the portion of the text that the audio coincides with. A simple track listing corresponding to each dialogue in the book would have helped tremendously with this problem.
4) As another reviewer has mentioned, the course shifts from beginner to advanced quite quickly about one-third of the way into the course. This is most noticeable in the audio accompaniments. The dialogue becomes fast-paced and "native" by about the end of Unit 4, complete with word-slurring and thick accents. This makes the dialogues almost impossible to follow if you are in the car and do not have the book to refer to. More intermediate stages in the audio would help tremendously, such as having more vocabulary pronunciation and slow to medium-paced dialogue.

The material and exercises in this book are very helpful in teaching unpointed Hebrew. There are plenty of exercises for practice and the main plus is an answer key in the back of the book! There are so many language products out here that don't put the answers in the book but force you to go online to check your work. I took one star away because I, like many others received CDs that didn't work. One of my discs would only download about 15 of the tracks and the other disc didn't work at all. The good news for me is that the Hebrew words have English transliterations which means I can still use the book. As a matter of fact you can buy the book without the CDs and I recommend that purchase instead of taking a chance with the poor quality control of the CDs. I would have taken another star away but the material will really have you reading and speaking modern hebrew. An inexpensive English to Hebrew dictionary is another good idea to help in your language learning.

Great way to learning modern Hebrew. Gets right to the point and you'll be reading and writing the Hebrew script from lesson 1. Teaches the printed Hebrew font as a brief lesson on the handwritten form. The audio CDs with the lessons are spoken by native speakers and at a normal rate (at least I'm convinced it is). Highly recommended if you want to learn modern Hebrew effectively. I have Colloquial Lithuanian and Colloquial Latvian and I have not been disappointed by the publisher yet!

Pros:
+This book has transliteration throughout, except for the dialogues in the last few lessons, and even in these lessons new vocab is provided with transliteration. Might be a crutch but for me who wants to learn to speak quickly, this is a definite boon.
+Has a useful section at the beginning explaining how to read both script and print styles. Even shows "pen stroke" order! Useful.
+Grammar description is clear, progressive and introduced in context.

Cons:
-I thought the new book I ordered would come with the CD but that is sold separate. But, alas, I found that Routledge now distributes the MP3 versions of the recordings for free on their website -- just google "routledgetextbook hebrew download" and click the first link to get to the download page. cool....

I share everyone's enthusiasm for this book: it's one of the most clearly-written, user-friendly guide for adults to learn Hebrew that I've yet found. I've spent many evenings and four weekends completing this book, and it's helped bring back the language fluency that I had as a child.

I've taken off a star, however, because of the inexcusable number of errors in the answer key and in the book. Sometimes, portions of exercises are inexplicably missing entirely from the answer key; in other cases, the answer key includes misspelled or sporadically different words compared to the actual exercise, and vice-versa. The CD recordings also vary words and even omit entire sentences from the in-book dialogs.

The authors also have a frustrating tendency to use words in the book that they do not define in the end-of-book dictionary, so it can be sometimes hard to read along. Plan on including a decent Hebrew dictionary along with this book.

The Disc 1 I received was also defective, however, Routledge promptly promised to replace it when asked.

That said, this remains one of the better books, its flaws aside. But it was inexcusable for the publishers to release it without a competent editorial job. "Modern Hebrew for Beginners" is probably your better bet.
