I’ve got to say it: This “American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Encyclopedia to Dog Care” book is written by the 5 DVMs in its Executive Committee and 1 Staff member, all of who consulted in writing this very informative book. And it has added a 6th DVM as a Special Consultant.

The inside dust cover back flap states that the AAHA “has set high standards for pet health care and veterinary hospitals. AAHA hospital members voluntarily have their facilities inspected and are known for providing the highest-quality care. With more than 15,000 members, AAHA promotes responsible pet ownership through its many outreach programs and the regular distribution of pet health information.”

The inside dust cover front flap states: “For more than sixty Years, the AAHA has set high standards for health care and veterinary hospitals. Now that same expertise is available to every dog owner in this comprehensive guide….”

“This compendium is really three books in one. Bringing together vital information that can be found in no other single volume: Part I: A Guide to Breeds and Temperaments, Part II: Caring for Your Dog, and Part III: The Encyclopedia of Dog Health.”

One common behavior problem, barking, is covered on page 227. Buy the book to read how the DVMs advise that this behavior be corrected.

The author, who pulled all of this information together, is Sally Bordwell.

The publisher is Hearst Books, NYC.

This 1996 hard-cover book with dust cover has 292 pages, with a 16-page insert of semi-glossy pages for 64 dog breeds. The rest of the book has hand-drawn black and white drawings, graphs, tables, lists, and information boxes. The headings and subheadings are clearly delineated for easier reading.

The ‘Contents’ list 3 main Parts. Buy the book to read the sub-Parts and look at all of the graphics and 64 color photos.
Part 1: A Guide to Breeds and Temperaments (Chapters 1 and 2)
Part 2: Caring for Your Dog (Chapters 2-8/ includes 16 pages of color photos of 64 breeds)
Part 3: The Encyclopedia of Dog Health (Chapters 9-22)

Following these, there is:
1. Recording of Your Dog’s History
2. Resources
3. Index

However, the book is missing the Bibliography, which is a standard book section, which gives the buyer information about good dog: magazines, books, videos, films, etc., especially for buyers who are just learning about dogs.

This book should be on the library shelf of all dog owners.

Another outstanding dog book that I also recommend is:
1. “The Complete Book of Dog Care”: https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Book-Dog-Care/dp/0385155476/ref=cm_cr_othr_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
