Morad
This is a dictionary of Old English (English prior to the Norman Conquest, more or less) based on notes made by Bosworth (1789-1876) in his reading of Old English texts put together with material from his own reading by Toller (1844-1930). In the preface Toller pleads for indulgence for the defects of the work, on the grounds of the greatness of the task. Later works may improve on Bosworth and Toller, but to date no dictionary of comparable or larger scope has been published in its entirety, and so it is still the one to get. Perhaps there may be defects, but the dictionary is a pleasure to use: the words are copiously illustrated by real quotations, and in many cases the quotations are translated into Modern English. The binding is the excellent OUP case-binding with saddle-sewn gatherings, built to be used rather than to merely decorate a shelf.

Until the University of Toronto completes--who knows when?--its Anglo-Saxon dictionary project, this volume is it This copy was used, but only lightly, and pages were perfect. Typeface is a little hard to read, and entries are in a slightly old-fashioned form, but this is the go-to volume for anyone interested in reading Old English texts.

There is no other dictionary to compare with this one for being comprehensive and mostly complete in including nearly every known word in the Old English (Anglo-Saxon) language. It has been the one used by scholars for more than a century. It *is* advisable to get the 'Supplement' to this dictionary as published by Alistair Campbell via Oxford University Press. He made some valuable additions to the base dictionary.

For recent work done in expanding on this dictionary, please view the University of Toronto's Department of English webpages. They have been making significant progress in increasing our available resources for the study of Old and Middle English dialects.
