Lin Yutang's Chinese-English Dictionary of Modern Usage (1972), compiled by the linguist and author Lin Yutang, contains over 8,100 character head entries and 110,000 words and phrases, including many neologisms. Lin's dictionary made two lexicographical innovations, neither of which became widely used. Collation is based on his graphical "Instant Index System" that assigns numbers to Chinese characters based on 33 basic calligraphic stroke patterns.

This paper makes a comparison between Mathews’ Chinese-English Dictionary which is the last Chinese-English dictionary compiled by foreign missionaries, and Lin Yutang’s Chinese English Dictionary of Modern Usage which is the first Chinese-English dictionary compiled by a Chinese. Three aspects of the two dictionaries are studied in this paper, namely the index system, the grammatical information of the lemma and the definition of the lemma.

It does have an English index, together with an interesting numerical index based upon numbers assigned to specific types of strokes at the tops and bottoms of the characters. I have used this, but find it cumbersome, although I suspect that one could become quite adept at using it with practice.
