Much of the recent upsurge in writing about citizenship in Britain has been prompted by concerns about state welfare. This article considers arguments from different standpoints which claim to establish this position, and finds them wanting.

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) is a think tank that claims to be dedicated to advocating the role of markets in solving economic and social problems. It is based in Westminster, London. Founded by businessman and battery farming pioneer Antony Fisher in 1955, it promotes monetarist economics.
