Dr. Carol has created a work of deep scholarship in "From Jerusalem to the Lion of Judah and Beyond". So deep that the last third of the book, very nearly, is taken up with foot notes, appendixes and citations. But the body of the work is crammed full of not simply data stacked upon data but insight as well. I knew that Idi Amin of Uganda proudly wore Israeli paratrooper wings but I didn't know that the fraud never made a jump.
Some details are utterly fascinating, like the troubles of Ethiopian fisherman in adapting to modern methods taught by Israelis. Other facts cause a tightening of various body parts. The long, disconnected and complicated history of helping the lost Jews of Ethiopia count here. Dr. Carol covers East Africa from the first days of Israel's engagement to the connections with the new nation of South Sudan.
There is much here to learn, even for life long followers of the story of Israel like me. Or for that matter for students of the post WWII history of East Africa. This isn't always a pleasant book to read but it is vastly informative and at the core of it, it is a work of hope. Decent people car actually make the world a better place, in spite of man's worst impulses.

I am engrossed in daily research on the Middle East and once in a while find books that not only provide me with factual information, but also provide links to other data sources which makes my research much easier. Steven Carol's book "From Jerusalem To The Lion Of Judah and Beyond" is such a book. Not only do I find the facts that I need, but I enjoy reading his presentation of the material and learn much from that. I cannot stress more for today's politicians that history is more than dates, names, with some geography and economics tossed in. History is a living, breathing account t of the steps taken before we took over. Many times we find some political leaders do not seem to know where they are going, and most often discover that it may very well be because they do not know where we've been! And any American leader who has no time to study the history of the Middle East definitely is left without a clue. If it were not for significant pressure from the Middle Easton on our fledgling government, there would have been little impetus for our leadership to have pushed so hard for a navy or a constitution!

As an old Africa hand, I have to say that Dr. Steve Carol's book "From Jerusalem to the Lion of Judah and Beyond: Israel's Foreign Policy in East Africa" brought back many memories.

My involvement in Africa goes back several decades and I currently have business in Africa.

I see the involvement of my country Israel as an example that has been set for me in my work in Africa. Israel went into Africa to try to help people and make their lives better. Of course Israel wanted to make political profit, the same way I seek to make profit for my business in Africa.

People today have clean water and food due to the involvement of Israel in Africa.
I have followed this wonderful model and today because of my involvement people have clean water where there was none and children have a school, while the parents of these children have a living wage.

If Israel were to be judged fairly the world would honor Israel for being the first country in the history of the world to move large amounts of black African's out of Africa and not have them in chains. Israel moved the Jews of Ethiopia into greater freedom than they had ever known in Ethiopia.

Dr. Carol has done a wonderful job in documenting the Israeli involvement in Africa. The book was a good read.
