This timely collection of essays presents new protected area theory, method, and practice as an explicit part of regional planning. Protected areas and regional planning must be pursued, not as separate, but rather as interrelated activities if both are to achieve their place in decision-making in North America. Nelson is distinguished professor emeritus and chair of the Heritage Resources Centre at the University of Waterloo.

A resource survey and planning method for parks, reserves, and other environmentally significant areas (ESAs) is presented in the context of a holistic balanced approach to land use and environmental management.

Protected areas – national parks, wilderness areas, community conserved areas, nature reserves and so on – are a mainstay of biodiversity conservation, while also contributing to people’s livelihoods, particularly at the local level. Protected areas are at the core of efforts towards conserving nature and the services it provides us – food, clean water supply, medicines and protection from the impacts of natural disasters. These included the establishment of a separately managed World Heritage Programme, the appointment of a new Director, Trevor Sandwith, in 2011, and the strengthening of the programme through prioritized budget support.

National parks are a devolved matter with each of the countries of the United Kingdom having its own policies and arrangements.
