It is partially based on notes by Karl Marx to Lewis H. Morgan's book Ancient Society (1877). The book is an early anthropological work and is regarded as one of the first major works on family economics.

Engels wrote The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State in just two months – beginning toward the end of March 1884 and completing it by the end of May. It focuses on early human history, following the disintegration of the primitive community and the emergence of a class. It focuses on early human history, following the disintegration of the primitive community and the emergence of a class society based on private property. Engels looks into the origin and essence of the state, and concludes it is bound to wither away leaving a classless society. Engels: Along with the state will inevitably fall.

Engels wrote The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State in. .He studied the latest books on the subject – including those of Russian historian Maxim Kovalevsky.

Friedrich Engels was born in 1820. In 1842 Engels went to Manchester to represent the family firm. Relationships there inspired the famous The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844. Collaboration with Marx began in 1844 and in 1847 he composed the first drafts of the Manifesto. Engels argued that the formation of Family marked the start of private property because of the hierarchy in the family per se which is primarily based on the Historical Materialism which was conceptualized by his contemporary, Karl Marx.

While the family keeps on growing, the system of kinship becomes ossified. The latter continues in this state and the family grows beyond it. With the same certainty which enabled Cuvier to conclude from some bones of Marsupialia found near Paris that extinct marsupialia had lived there, with this same certainty may we conclude from a system of kinship transmitted by history that the extinct form of the family corresponding to this system was once in existence. The systems of kinship and forms of the family just mentioned differ from the present systems in that every child has several fathers.

The book is amazing but this specific printing is so small that it is impossible for the people with vision problems, to read. I am going to order some other printing so reading in bed would be easier.

Arm chair anthropology at its finest. I'm sure the field has marched on but this was still a very interesting read, and pretty accessible, though some of the cultural references are so old you need Wikipedia to get the meaning.
Rolorel
Amazing to read how much was understood about human evolution in the nineteenth century. Really puts our modern assumptions about society into historical context.

This is a five-star book, if five is the upper limit--it's one of fifteen or twenty of the very best, most important books ever written, BUY IT, READ IT, but do yourself a favor, DON'T BUY THE AMAZON PRINT-ON-DEMAND EDITION (look at the title, it should have two commas--grammar demands at least one--the print-on-demand edition doesn't have any). BUY A DIFFERENT EDITION. This edition of the book is set in 8 or 8.5 pt type (very small); compare the number of pages to other editions and you'll see what's going on. It's so small it's very hard to read. What's the point? If I'd looked at the page count, I would have known, but this is so unusual, the seller should have explicitly stated the book's type size.
Everyone should read and understand this book. Regardless of your ideology, this book is the key to understanding family dynamics in a capitalist system. Read Locke and Smith first, and then read this.
