This book is a great introduction to low-light photography. It covers many of the basics, and gives some very interesting hints, like the fact that it never really gets completely dark. The comparison between two pictures of the author's house blew me away. One was taken with a multi-hour exposure at night, the other during the day, and you can barely tell the difference.

The book, however, suffers from being very, very out of date. The only mention of digital cameras is right at the beginning where it states that they basically are uninteresting at the moment. That was true when it was written, but not today. The information is largely still relevant, although the comparison of ISO ratings, discussion of the merits of various types of film, uprating film, and the relative merits of transparencies and negatives, are completely irrelevant to most photographers today (and extremely relevant to a shrinking few still).

If you want a good introduction on low light photo, this is a good choice. If you want to know how to use your digital camera to specifically to do so, this is not the book for you.

This is a truly excellent how-to on capturing those difficult shots in low light environments, both outdoors and indoors. I am a professional scenic and wildlife photographer and I learned MUCH -- and gained considerable confidence, too -- from reading and studying this book. I read it very slowly, over many months, and tried the techniques and principles Lee Frost describes in my own work as I progressed through the chapters. The results were outstanding, leaving me with far more confidence and skill in managing difficult shots. If anything, the book covers too much, with a long lead-in on types of cameras and lenses, etc., and the final sections on specific subject types tend to be repetitive of the central text, itself. (But, then, we learn by repetition and Mr. Frost is a good teacher.) Still, the CORE information in the book is extremely helpful and valuable. It's on my top shelf for photographic technique and will remain there!

This is an excellent source book for intermediate photographers who wish to better understand the principles of exposure, filters, composition and, of course, low-light photography.
I don't know how other reviewers can claim that the book lacks detail. Frost covers a lot of ground, offers techniques for shooting many different subjects and situations, and does so in an entertaining manner.
I'd place this above a beginner level text, but since it does cover a great amount of subject matter, it isn't as specialized as some other books. So, again, it's a good intermediate level text.
In short, it's well written, entertaining, covers a good broad spectrum of low light issues, and the pictures are darn good as well!

Even though this book is 9 years old and written for film photographers I still got a lot out of it.

It provided me with great instructions how to take all sorts of low-light images and covers some of the techniques involved. I shoot a lot of low-light events and the things I learned from this book will be very important to the improvment of my work.

The book it filled with wonderful photographs that relate to the technique being discussed.

The core information in this book is extremely helpful and valuable. This book will be a valuable reference tool for me for many years. (I would love to see an updated version of this book though.)

Lee Frost is my favorite photographic author. Unlike some other photographers who decide to write a book, Mr. Frost also has writing talent. He never seems to be talking down to his readers, as some seem to do. Instead, his books give you that "I'm no one special, but I'll tell you what I've learned so you don't make the same mistakes" type of feeling. I particularly like the fact that he includes pictures where he made a mistake, something we know every pro does but usually won't admit to. This book gives you everything you need to know to shoot great pictures in low light, using film or digital. He doesn't go into digital much, but the techniques are the same for both, with the exception of having to bracket exposures. Who needs to do that when you can see the results right away? But if you're shooting film, you need this book. The pictures are fantastic and clearly illustrate the author's point, even the mistakes. If you haven't bought a camera yet, read this book first!!! You may decide, given the beauty of film pictures and the availability of excellent film cameras for very little money, that digital photography isn't for you. A great book, either way you decide to go.

People with a great deal of photography experience may find this book too basic. On the other hand, absolute novices may be expecting step-by-step instructions -- which they are not going to get. Yet, I have been around cameras for more than 35 years and I still found this to be a clear, informative resource. The tips and suggestions for successful low-light picture situations are valuable reference, and most of the pictures illustrating the book are stunning, with enough explanation to show how different techniques can affect the result.

This book is a pleasant addition to my photography library!

I understand there is a newer version of this book than the one I purchased. This spends a lot of time on film and film choices, which is less relevant in a digital world, perhaps, but still useful. Tips on exposure, composition, and the technical aspects of adding light are much more timeless though, and these appear sound and useful. As with many books of this type, there is as much inspiration in the accompanying photos as there is practical information.
