Kristine Fisher Elgin Park: An Ideal American Town by Michael Paul Smith is a free NetGalley ebook that I read while spending time in a cabin just outside of Yellowstone. When I initially say that this book is absolutely unreal, it almost feels like a disservice to Smith and his photography, so I'll amend my statement and say that it is heartwarmingly idyllic. Each photo is so careful and so real. Michael Paul Smith: Michael Paul Smith has been creating scale models for 25 years. Michael Paul Smith was born on Nov. 22, 1950, in Pittsburgh to Roy and Audrey Smith. Mr. Smith’s work would eventually result in two books, Elgin Park: An Ideal American Town (2011) and Elgin Park: Visual Memories of Midcentury America at 1/24th Scale (2015), both written with Gail K. Ellison. A note Mr. Smith wrote on the Flickr site in 2010 announcing his first book contract gives a sense of how casual and do-it-yourself his art was. What’s most interesting, he wrote, is when I started to take the photos of my models, I had no idea what I was doing.

This is a spectacular book that conveys to the reader/viewer the "days of yore" in the middle of the twentieth century through the trifecta of the town of "Elgin Park," borrowed from author Michael Paul Smith's hometown of Sewickley, Pennsylvania; many die-cast cars and trucks; and the combination of model buildings, real backgrounds and Smith's uncanny eye for photographing that gives each of us a different "ticket" into a past that is integral Americana. My own childhood years involved many/most of these cars/trucks/buildings, so it's with delight that I turn each page of an almost real-life time and place. I cannot too highly recommend this masterpiece that is tucked like a rare and priceless gem between the pages of a high-quality hardcover book.

Michael Paul Smith pioneered a beautiful miniature photography style with a point-and-shooter camera. The technique is simple, yet impossibly hard to replicate (I tried), it takes an artist's eye to find the exact angle and light to bring these old automobile collectibles to life. The Elgin Park imaginary town is a sweet haven for nostalgia, but unlike most nostalgia trips, there's no bitterness, no "everything was better earlier" tone, it's just sweet, refreshing and ever so stylish. This is the first Elgin Park book where the style is still developing, I recommend to pair it with the newer book for the full experience.

Elgin Park is a special volume dedicated to the nostalgia many of us have for a period in America that is fading away at a rapid pace. Michael Paul Smith has constructed an imaginary small town and photographed his fantastic model car collection within its framework. This is an exceptional tour de force. The photos are almost impossible to tell from those of actual full-sized cars and structures. Anyone who loves cars, mid-century Americana, architectural models, great photography and craftsmanship, will love this volume.

The introductory text is lively and tells the story of this unique man, without being at all tedious. A totally delightful book.
Wat!?
Michael's skill in building models/dioramas is truly incredible. You can see plenty of examples of his work in this book. Add in some great diecast from Danbury and Franklin Mints as well as West Coast Precision Diecast and you have a book that will keep diecast addicts happy for a long time. I've looked at this book over and over and know I will enjoy it for years. The way Michael takes his photos is inspirational - I am an enthusiastic photographer and know getting the looks Michael achieves is very difficult to do, especially considering his camera equipment is not at pro level.

Get this book - you won't be sorry you did.

craftsmanship and a beautiful sense of nostalgia are wielded deftly by artist Michael Paul Smith in Elgin Park. I could carry on poetically about the nature of the human mind and our need to dream of better times past but I wont. Let me just say this, sit on your porch swing with a perspiring glass of lemonade in one hand and this book in the other and enjoy...
Brariel
This well printed book is full of outstanding photographic compositions recreating a bygone era of charm and good design, filling your heart with sweet nostalgia.
The photographer is superb and so are the micro-worlds he creates.
The converging talents of an exquisite craftsman and talented photographer.
If you are a scale modeler, a photographer of just like the golden decades of the 40s and 50s, this is for you.
Wizer
If your interests include super realistic modeling and America in the '20's through the '50's, you will find yourself staring at every picture for many wonderful moments. Mr. Smith's recreation of small town American life in those days is weirdly better than reality. So glad I found this!
Perfect gift for a car enthusiasts, who is also a woodworker.
