Frontier photographer L. Huffman (1854 - 1931) captured the spirit of the American West . Huffman (1854 - 1931) captured the spirit of the American West like no other artist. As comfortable photographing the haunting images of the plains Indians as he was the working cowboy, Huffman accurately recorded a passing way of life on the American western frontier. While many painters and photographers created art that romantized the West, Huffman photographed everyday life, ranging from ranching and hunting scenes to landscapes of Yellowstone National Park. This handsome volume contains over 500 spectacular images of the American West.

Montana photographer, L. Huffman took many of his most acclaimed photographs in the early 1880's, doing so with relatively crude equipment and technology, yet producing images of a quality that are still unmatched today. He photographed the West as it was, truthfully and not romanticized. Huffman: Photographer of the American West. Home Peterson, Larry Len L. L. ISBN 10: 0963564285, ISBN 13: 9780963564283.

Most distinguished American photographers who traveled west of the Mississippi . All books by Larry Len Peterson are great. One person found this helpful.

Most distinguished American photographers who traveled west of the Mississippi River during the late 19th and early 20th centuries sought to capture this 'cowboy artist' through their lens; they included Edward S. Curtis, Roland Reed, Harry Pollard, Sumner W. Matteson, Almeron J. Baker, M. O. Hammond, Clarence S. Bull, Hildore C. Eklund, and Dorothea Lange. Larry Len Peterson, a native of Plentywood, Montana, is an enthusiastic art collector and an acknowledged expert on art and art history of the American West.

Laton Alton Huffman (October 31, 1854 – February 28, 1931) was an American photographer of Frontier and Native American life. Born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, he spent most of his life photographing the area around his Montana home. Having initially worked at Fort Keogh, he started to sell prints of his glass plate negatives. In 1976, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Huffman wasn’t the first photographer working in Montana in the late 1800s, but he was one of the few who stayed to chronicle the story of the West. Huffman grew up in Waukon, Iowa, taking photos alongside his father, . In 1878, the young Huffman headed west on a wagon train, but it was turned back in Kansas after a close call with Chief Dull Knife’s warriors who were fleeing the 4th Cavalry. The next year, Huffman took an unpaid position as photographer at Fort Keogh in Eastern Montana

Arriving in Fort Keogh, Montana Territory, in 1879, ten years before Montana would become a state, frontier photographer Laton Alton Huffman (1854–1931) would capture the spirit of the American West like no other artist. Equally comfortable photographing Plains Indians and working cowboys, Huffman worked both in the studio and out on the open range, carrying his camera on horseback as he documented untamed Western landscapes and the last of the buffalo herds. L. A. Huffman: Photographer of the American West contains more than 300 spectacular images of the American West, most of them from the extensive collection of Gene and Beverly Allen, as well as reproductions of many of Huffman’s printed and published collectibles and memorabilia. In preparing this revised edition, Gene Allen and Larry Len Peterson selected their favorite images from the previous editions and added others from the Allen collection, including five of Huffman's rare photomurals.

Beautiful book. Lots of great stories about early years in eastern Montana. Being raised in Miles City, I knew about Huffman and saw some of his pictures but always wanted to see more. This book has fulfilled that dream.

This book has been reprinted in 2013 by Mountain Press so be sure not to pay extravagant amounts on the Internet for one of the older editions (I think there are two) -- unless it turns out that one of the previous editions contain numerous photos of Native Americans that this new version does not. And therein lies my warning. Let me explain: I don't know to what extent this reprint differs from the previous two versions, but it is stated in the book that there are changes in photograph choices. However, for a book this size, it is extremely skimpy on its Native American photos and the ones it does print are rather small in size considering the size of the book (12"H x 10"W). There are multiple images on a page (and sometimes they are repeated! See below). This would be partially forgivable had they included more of Huffman's photos of Native Americans, but again, the selection here is quite skimpy. I have a book called The Frontier Years by Mark H. Brown which contains a better selection of photos of Native Americans. I was expecting (my fault, I know) to see those photos here in this book, but better quality with a few of them printed large. Instead, like I stated above, that is not the case. So my warning is this: If you are buying this because you want to see great images of Native Americans as photographed by Huffman, buy the Mark H. Brown (with W. R. Felton) book instead.

Here are some strange choices by the writer/publisher:
On pages 72 & 75 is the same photo of Two Moons.
On pages 30, 33 & 72 is the same photo of Rain-in-the-Face.
