I found the Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop CS by Mike Wooldridge very useful for two reasons. First the book quickly familiarized me with the changes and additions for the newest Photoshop upgrade. Secondly I keep it close to my computer for those times when I need a quick "how-to" answer and not a long explanation. The book is divided into logical task oriented sections so it is easy to find any topic such as color modes, how to use layers or contact sheets.

In 2001 GIMP was already 5 years old, but Photoshop had a big impact I guess, so it's interesting to be able to look back at what it did, beyond dry release notes or whatever is left outside the executable binaries. The screenshots are rather small, so I think you need a rather big screen (or zoom) to actually enjoy this book.

I had looked at several books on learning CS5 and most of them seemed to be suited for people who had used previous versions of Photoshop and now wanted to learn CS5. Well, I wasn't in that boat. I had never used Photoshop at all, so I needed to learn from the ground up. If you are in the same spot I was, this is the book for you. It assumes you know nothing about the program and even goes so far as to show you how to launch it from the Programs menu, which I got a good chuckle out of, thinking "Hey! Even my dad could follow this!"

The style is very straight-forward and outside of a one or two sentence synopsis at the start of every task, it's all about doing, not reading. The steps for any given task are clear and the illustrations are helpful. This book is not going to make you a Photoshop professional but it quickly shows you how to use all of the tools. I highly recommend it for the beginner.

This book is so clearly defined as to where to click, what to look for, and richly illustrated that a person cannot go wrong. It is so easy, even a person without any Photoshop skills, and without any Adobe windows/panels knowledge can read/click along with the book. The index is also quite comprehensive and easy to cross-reference. So why 4 stars, as opposed to 5? The one complaint I have is that the files that you may want to use to follow along are not included. Yes, it is easy to find them on the web, but considering this is a very introductory book on Photoshop, I believe the files should be right there too. Another aspect of this book, which doesn't diminish the content, is that it is very elementary, and some of the file examples, are not perfect examples of when you may want to use the tool (e.g. select the inside of a coconut with the oval select tool).

All in all though, it is an easy to follow, richly illustrated (color all the way through), and great way to learn the basics of Photoshop. Do not forget to consider the companion book: Photoshop CS5: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks (also a "Visually" style book). I just wish the files were on CD or DVD. It would be 5 stars easily then.

Photoshop is a great book, I have no problem reading it because of my reading glasses. I have about 10 Visually Books on different subjects, and they are extremely helpful. I have learned to do all kinds of work with my books. In the beginning I used the training tapes of Adobe, they are good, but the step by step method of Photoshop is great. I checked the window 7 book out of the library for Earl, and it was the only book that helped him to learn how to use the computer. Even through I no longer use the book, it is always near me just in case it is needed. At this time Earl is using Visually Photoshop to edit his photos, and he is learning quite fast.

I was kinda of wondering after reading all the reviews(something we all should do)that how in the world can you teach yourself visually the monster known as Photoshop.Ok,I have a ton of books on CS5 and have learned alot from them but I was just a wee bit curious about this concept.Soooo, looking at the price(more than fair)I sprang for the book.Long story short, you can teach yourself by following the step by step, well, the pictures. This book will not explore the program in depth but you will learn enough to load files, work with layers, filters, colors and more to get you started.I started to give this book four stars because I,as stated, have books on this program and bought this one on a whim but after going though the book,I was wishing I had this book when first starting out.It will be very helpful for the newbe IMHO.

I believe that the book itself is quite good and worth a score of 4 or 5 stars. My problem is that I'm using the PC Kindle application. At least on the PC many of the screen captures of Photoshop CS5 can not be read. The photos are too small and there is no way to enlarge them. I'm not sure what they would look like on the Kindle device proper but smaller Photoshop application photos in the
PC version are unreadable. The only alternative is to guess what the screenshots show by bringing up the Photoshop application on your PC and doing a little matching and guessing. (Update) I got a paper copy of this book for Christmas-I'll give that one a 4 1/2 star rating!

I couldn't wait to get this book in after reading the reviews and was thrilled when it finally came in because i was ready to tackle some CS5 techniques that I hadn't quite been able to figure out, however, when I sat down with the book and the program itself, i found myself just as confused as before i started. The book basically is a dictionary for all the functions telling you about & how to do a certain function, but, we all know CS5 is about a *series* of functions and this book doesn't help with that at all. I found myself flipping back and forth between several chapters before realizing it wasn't anymore help than the actual "help button" on my screen.

Unlike teach yourself visually with dreamweaver Cs5, author mike Woolridge does not explain well or provide good screen shots, its a bit vague in set ups, and you have to know photoshop well enough on a pc format to really understand. It is not designed to be used with macintosh layouts. the author does make some nice quick tip notes, but you have to decipher which photos in placement or screen shot he's making the suggestion for, its random to the chapters provided. Am disappointed.
Excellent book. Easy to follow. Best books to learn computer programs.
