Larry Towell is one of the great photojournalists around. Having said that, I was less impressed with "In the Wake of Katrina" and I think it is because much of the photography is about the destruction of land, homes, things, et. but empty of people

Larry Towell is one of the great photojournalists around. His best work is of people, and he not only gets close to them with his wide angle lens, but also has a uncommonly empathic connection with the folks he photographs - usually people who are struggling for justice and dignity. Most of his work is in black and white, on film (yes real 35mm film still). but empty of people. Yes, desolation itself is a statement, but after a while, all the photos of the destruction tend to blur.

Larry Towell's business card reads 'Human Being'. Experience as a poet and a folk musician have done much to shape his personal style. Larry Towell is one of the great photojournalists around. Most of his work is in black and white, on film (yes real 35mm film still). What separates him from the rest is his eye - Towell has an aesthetic and quirky sensibility that few photojournalist process, while maintaining a journalistic and humanistic core that few artists get.

I have been to Palestine, El Salvador, Mexico, post Katrina New Orleans and his photos of people there are outstanding. Those books are essential for anyone appreciating humanistic photojournalism, as opposed to shock, gory or exotic photojournalism.

Having said that, I was less impressed with "In the Wake of Katrina" and I think it is because much of the photography is about the destruction of land, homes, things, etc., but empty of people. Yes, desolation itself is a statement, but after a while, all the photos of the destruction tend to blur. He probably visited soon after the storm when most people were evacuated. Yet, the few photos of people in the book are of course, very very good.
